Davidson and his Harley battled with Scott and his Evel Knievel Harley, with veteran Scott .., taking the win . Pennsylvanian Billy Schaeffer and his Harley took third. Freeman pulled off the holeshot and led the X Rs of former National Champion Mert Lawwill and Harley factory rider Ted Boody the entire 10 laps: But the fight for second wasn't decided until Lawwill went too high after trying to stuff it under Freeman. That slip let Boody by for second with Mert hanging on to third . Gene Romero, who finished fifth , observed the one-line track with a grin and said, "Boy, starts are really important here, aren't they?"
