The second time out , Hendricks blasted off the line determined to keep Marcus behind him. Marcus was really cooking. trying to get by Hendricks and keeping Youngblood off his tail. These three were something else, right on top of each other. Heading into the final turn in front of the tower. Marcus went down, turning over second to Youngblood. With not enough time to recover, Marcus settled for third but it was good enough for a second overall; top honors going to Hendricks and third to Youngblood. Results in Results Section. JUNE 17 Ron Rosega rd took the overall win in the 125 Beginner class. In the first moto, Rick Miller (SuzAl Ba ker) grabbed the lead and 34 held it throughout the moto with a beautiful lead. Behind him a battle was being waged for second between John Hagle and Todd Rhoades for second. The checkered flag waved Miller home the leader. with Hagle holding onto second. The second time out, Rhoades came' charging off the line. out for the win . He had Tom Schaffer and Miller staying in close behind him and challenging hard. Rosega rd started moving up through the pack for a stab at first. He got by Miller and went to work on Schaffer. R ho ad es. in trouble. dropped out of the moto leaving the lead open . Rosegard pushed Schaffer re le ntlessly. and finally got by for th e lead. holdi ng it down to the wire. Rosegard too k home top hon ors. seco nd overall went to Miller and third to Schaffer. Sm oot h a nd steady riding gave the win in the 125 Pro class to Mike Pilla r (Sur -Co le Bros.). In the firs t moto, Evan Marcus (Yam -Granada Yam.) took over the lead with Bob Kline really close in seco nd. Kline got by and est a b lished himself in the lead . Marcus. having trou ble, fell back to fifth. Pillar moved up to second and held it throughout the moto. T he second time out th e 125 Pros were ' off to a rocky start. After being black-flagged due to a gate malfunction. the hu ge flock stormed up the hill. Pillar was in the lead with • some heavy traffic behind him Marcus in second. Kline running third. Kirk Sturgeon in fourth and Paul Lane, back after a shoulder injury, in fifth. Marcus moved into the lead on the back stretch with Kline right on .Pillar's tail in a struggle for second. Kline went down in a tum and had to pull off the track . Marcus. by now had opened up a secure lead . Lane and Jim Tassano (Suz-Syklop's Cycle) locked into a battle for fourth. Tassano moved up and the battle resumed between . Lane, Andy Jannings, and J erry Shore. all rig ht on top of each o ther. This batt le continued right down to the line where Pillar took home top money. second overall went to Marcus and Tassano, holding onto fourth in the moto , took home third overall. Ernie Hendricks (Mai-Cole Bros.) ended up on top"of the 250 battle. In the first moto , he had all he could do CHULA VISTA . CA, JUNE 15 The action was hot and heavy in all of the junior and intermediate classes as all the riders were trying to get maximum point earnings towards a top spot in the over $5000 merchandise sweepstakes being posted this year by promoters Don and Bob Basile. In 125 Junior action. Rick Johnson and Doug Berg scored overwhelming victories, but in the second division Allen Fox , Matt Hope and Keith Finch had a real dog- fight with Fox the victor . in a three-way tie- breaker second moto . The 250 Juniors provided their usual sl am -bang program with Skipp Wamsley battling to a hard-fought win over a surprising Bryan Van Order in the first division . Tom Bolton dominated the second with all the action behind him . The 500 juniors had a new winner in first timer Les Fra ncisco. who knocked off first moto winner Wes Maine. The pros ran true to form with the exception of the 125s. where a protest was fi led a nd sent to CMC Headquarters by Terry She kell against apparent winner John Tessitore for rough riding in a second rnoto. fall down righ t offthe gate. A final note on a little publicized class that provided a spectatcular exhibition of riding. The 100 J u nior class . where Mike Cady, another mini graduate, was taking his first ride at Speedway 117 on a full -sized motorcycle. Cady finished one-half lap ahead of second in the first moto , got off late (sixth) in the second moto and proceeded to do it again by a quarter lap! • Results in Results Section. Allison returns to South BayST By Rod Eschenburg CHULA VISTA. CA ,JUNE 18 Speed wa y I I7's weekly Saturday night short track program got a big boost wit h the appearance of AMA Expert Jo hn Allison. Allison. returning to the track where he began his racing career, picked up both the 250 and 500 Pro Main wins over local favorite Richie Volk in two exciting 15 lappers. Behind Volk in the 250 Main was Earl Barker, who is rapidly returning to his old form after a several-year layoff. In the 500 Pros. it In the two largest classes for the day, 125 Beginner and Novice . a continual batt le waged for the checkered flag . Mark Ursett (Hon) of Ridgecrest took top beginner, winning over Steve Chavez (Suz) , Barstow, and Pat Fealy (Suz). Victorville. • Results in Results Section. Rick Volk took second in both 250 and 500 Pro at South Bay. was Earl Roloff. Jr. in for a hardearned third ahead of Ward Ring. For the first 10 laps Roloff and Travis Perron. Jr. traded positions almost every lap until Perron fell back with problems. In the sporting classes . the 125 class again went to Jeff "Iron Man" Neeley with another three moto victory over Ch uck Meyer. Both riders are active MXers in this area. The 250 and 500 Sporting classes produced large fields of riders with the new format of stock frames in the class really catching on. Neeley was stopped this week in his bid for another two-for' two night in the 250 Main by Billy Hicks in a very competitive race. Last week's 500 winner John Garcia came through with a repeat job this week to round out the night. • Results in Results Section. Ducker sets new record at CRC Hi Desert warmup By Patty Kelsay ADELANTO . CA ,]UNE 12 The Californ ia Racing Club hosted the warmup opener of the Hi Desert Series MX at 395 Cycle Park. The Hi Desert Series will pit riders fro m desert communities against one another in five separate MX events. Riders will earn points for their hometown . with the top locality bagging a giant five foot trophy at the end of the series . Getting to know the track and taking home the winnings in the mini class was Jeff Black (Suz) of Ridgecrest , who won both motos . Second in both motos was Ted Stuebner (Yam) of Phelan. Bill Henry (Suz) , Apple Valley, took top honors in the 100cc class, after a two moto battle with Mark Urseth (Suz) of Ridgecrest , who placed second. The secondmoto for the 125 Intermediates and Experts provided spectators with a thrill as Terry Ducker. aboard a Lancaster Yamaha machine. set a new ·395 Cycle Park track record. going the full distance in 1:49; three seconds faster than Steve Davis , who turned a 1:52 six weeks ago. Ducker won both 'motos to take the 125 Expert cash . Dean Taylor; of Lancaster , riding a JD -prepared Suzuki . placed second in both motes . Adelanto rider Bob Sherwood (Suz) bagged a first -pla ce trophy in the 125 Intermediate class. . Out -of -towner Ed Hartman . from Whittier, won th e first Veteran moto astride a Suzuki . and then was beat en out by high desert rider Asker Larnkjaer (Suz) of Hesperia . who too k th e overall win . MXerGary Jones wins two at CoronaTT By Elaine Jones CORONA, CA ,JUNE 15 Gary Jones, better known for his motocross prowess tha n T T squared off aga inst Mike Myers. a keen TT competitor. Meye rs was a board a 500 Yamaha while Jo nes chose the bike he developed. an Ammex. In the Open Amateur/Expert TT. it was Myers who got the drive off the line with superior horsepower. Jones was a respectable second but when they hit the turns it was Jones who took the advantage. having a much more agile bike. It went back and forth for five laps. Jones would pull ahead in the turns only to lose it on the straights as Myers powered by. On the sixth lap Jones got a break and enough distance to outrun Myers all the way to the checkered. The Money TT again saw Jones and Myers on the line but the difference was Myers' first string Yamaha. It was no contest . as Myers chewed up the TT course and spit it out. Jones took second. Jones also won the 250 Amateur/Expert TT. Matt James was off first but Jones took over on the second lap and brought it home. David Callaway held second until the white flag lap when he slid out coming down the front straight and Kirk Johnson moved into second. James picked u p third ahead of Callaway. Eddie Lawson took time off from the national circuit to ta ke on the half mile Money boys. Jim Wright was a lso on hand along with Wayne Rainey. It looked to be a super race but Ra iney came up with problems on the starting line and they were never solved. Wright took the holeshot but Lawson made short work of him. taking over on lap two and pulling away. Wright held off Singleton for second. Ra iney was in top form in the Open Amateur/Expert half mile, turning 22.37 for fast time of the night, and awfully close to the 22.24-second track record set by Lawson. Rainey came off the line like an explosion with Dave Peters. Rob Selvy, Dylan Neihart, Kinsey and Wright rounding out the top six. By the fourth lap Kinsey had worked his way to third with Jim Vendley moving up behind him whi le Neihart. tried to . hold off Wright. Wright let it all hang out in the fifth lap picking up three places to get within striking distance of Rainey and Peters. It took Wright the last lap to ge t by Peters and collect second, behind the super ride of Rainey. Dylan Neihart took over the first place spot from Rob Selvy on the fourt h la p of the 250 Amateur/Expert half mile and never looked back. Selvy did keep the second place spot ou t of the hands of KirkJohnson . Todd Brown ruled the 125cc Amateur/Expert cla sses collecting the gold in both the TT and half mile.
