Ch ris Gray continued his winning strea k fr om th e p reviou s week . toppin g th e novice class. \ T he bom b was located at the edge of the big gray mound near th e footh ills close to th e power line roa d. At exact ly 9:03 a.m. , the sta rt line exploded into a blanket of dust as the zig-zagging pintrai ls of d ust head ed out. Piloting his Husky past the bomb first was Larry R oese le r , followed closely br Ch ecker Brian Wrigh t. Steve . Ekhardt of the Desert Fox es was next , follo wed by Paul C h ristensen , Art Knapp, John W atki ns, a nd Garry Conner . The course veered to the left pick ing up t he winding sa n dwash that sq ui rms to the top of the footh ills. Just before ch eck one a t th e ba se of · th e big red mounta in , the course picked up a n a ccess road that leads to the left into th e mountains . Just a bout the time th e racers had it in their m ind th is was a dumb drag race , the course ' hooked left and shot up a 60·foot wall - th e kind that doesn' t forgive if you're not over th e tank and in the rig ht gear. From this point the co urse passed through some re al steep u p and down canyons , the type that will eas ily bottom out the best suspensio ns . around, Then th e course cleared th e first saddleback rise , d ropp in g off down the canyon over gradua l who ops and scattered pucker b ushes. Roeseler blazed the trail but Wright kept the desert ace in h is sigh ts . Passing through the ridge run area on top of t he mountains , Roesel er hoo ked a left and headed for th e In vader downhill. Turning left again th e course vanished over th e side of a sa ~d/gravel downhill steeper than th e In vader. Ro eseler pulled t he fro nt en d up and gassed the Husky to t he bott om , le a vin g spectators looki ng at ea ch other as if to say " I really d idn't. see tha t. d id I?" W right cr ested the to p and duplicated the fe a t , c a u si n g e ven m or e exci te ment at the bottom of t he hill. As the leaders headed tow ards the ra ilroad tracks thro ugh some fres h, new territory, the beginner and novice start eru pte d. The lea der didn't look lik e ' Chris G ra y. R id i ng out o f Pasadena Su zuk i, Gra y sh uc ked his Husky for one of th e yellow critters. Flyin g b y on the b ike he conned h is broth er out of, Robin Busse m ade Gray work for th e lead. Nex t came firsi heavy Bob Gibson , follow ed by Byron Sell ers, #692 , Brett How ell and J am es Bell. T he novice ra ce was a 250 class field d ay. Of th e first 20 bik es, 13 were twc- five-o hsl Heading up th e wash b eh ind th e Spangler Mounta ins, Roese ler a n d Wright stre tc he d ou t th ei r lead as the "Wyomi ng Kid " Rich Jackson moved into th ird . Charlie Hamill had to rea lly gas his trail bike through he re . with J ohn Watkins a nd Dick Camp right behind him . Roeseler got flashbacks of the Simi race as he passed by the stoic m on ol ith roc ks lining the on e-b ike trail t hat wormed t hrough t hese ageless guard ians of Ch a rlie's Place: Hoo king over th e top of the tracks. the co urse he aded across th e desert dumping on to th e teag le wash access road for gas. girls and excitem ent . Excitement was the word for -it because as Roeseler pitt ed a nd too k off. W right came around th e corner, thought th e '1hite pickup was going to ge t in his way and dum ped the Husky. Remount ing with no apparent problems , the you ng ace took off after the fleeing Roesel er . Aft er the amateur/ experts finish ed th eir repleni shment d ut ies and started loop two, t he novices and beginners followed. T he home check gang had a t ime herding the T ra il No vices and Beginners int o th e finis h lin e. Oren Beck sa id "H a p py Fa ther's Da y, Dad ," taking firs t Trail Novice . Second was Jeff Moell er , th ird went to Rolli n Busse (ho w m any a re t he re?) and fourth to Luther W inn . T im Ekhart too k fi rst. 250 Beginn er ,. D a ve . The C b ik e win ners were Keit h Tulla r , .493c a nd Bernie Brawner. Firs t . Senior Open bike was Dave Conners' dad , Bud. Rich Little (not the comedian) was the heavyweight champ. Meanwhile th e pits were blessed with a whole slew of sen iors: Tom Morgan (O pe n) , Cecil Sterns (250), Pat Dem p sy, Carey Decker and Bob Burchj of the Open class . Don Schuman and " Rokon " Ron herded the senior guys out for loop two. Meanwhile . . Roesel e r was approaching the downhill hold ing a one-minute lea d on Wright. W righ t had a seven -minute lea d ove r R ich J ackson . Art Knapp was next , then Payton who m ad e it down in one piece after his crash and burn display t he first time. Most folks have enough trouble keepi ng t heir feet on the pegs just going down a hi ll like this. These two cha ra cters were waving !lne foo t at me while flying down t he hill , almost , giving m e and the specta tors a cardia c a rres t. T hey were Mike Alexander and DIG ITRON ICS .
