BySueSenn TRABUCO CYN ., CA ,JUNE 19 Amateur George Erl knew exactly what he was doing when he p aced himself behind Lynn McGraw for six of t he eight laps 32 before he claimed the ove rall win in the senior division at Escape Country. Erl - who is the father of Cami , 7. and Chad, I, r: was riding a 12' Husky when he claimed his victory over Open Amateur "McGraw, Open " Expert Gary Sigman and Open Amateur Ken Thorall. Erl's little Husky has really been put through the paces lately as it was the fifth 125 in the recent Baja International. The SRA special of the day was for Dads. If a child signed up , dad rode free. The four-mile course was in the back section of' Escape Country and included the clover-leaf motocross course which most riders said "was the best part." It also had some off camber sections that helped show how Jeff 'Goat' Hollie got his nick name. Hollie, who rides in the 101 ·200 class, leaped out front where he , stayed for the entire hour and by the sixth lap he had a 40 -second lead over Warren Barr, Sterling Hopson and George ErI, who continually switched places but ended in that order. In the 0-I 00 class, Do ug Maxwell put a good distance between himself and Jeffery Coan who was battling it out with Ken Kendricks for second. Mini Novice rider Kevin Senn held fourth overall and first mini until the seventh lap when he layed his Yamaha 80 down on a curve and was passed by Jim McGraw on a 100 . Senn still finished fifth overall with a 90 ·second lead over Terry Swetz and Kevin Thompson who were second and third minis. Amateur Lance Tubbs was given a run for his money in the 250 class. Expert Bill Sabo, who was making his first appearance at an SRA G P , really liked the hills and curves. For the first three laps , he and Tubbs see sawed the lead. But from the fourth lap on, it was Sabo all the way who went on to finish with a three-minute lead over third place. Larry Katuls, KTM rider Gary .Bates rode impressively, working his way up from fourth place to claim the overall win in the open class . His toughest competitior, a Husky, was aced out because of engine problems. Neil Stapleton (Yam) and William Nuesse (TT500) both desperately wanted second and they battled right down to the finish where the TT had to give in to the sm aller bi ke because o f maneuverability on a sharp hair pin curve. • Results in Results Section. Gripsters go for it at Elsinore IT By Mauree n L.ee ELSINORE, CA. JUNE 19 To beat the heat the Gripsters held their scrambles Saturday night, but the turnout wasn't as good as it should have been. Still, most classes ran heats giving everyone plenty of rid ing . Main troubles of the night were those of riders vs. rubber starting ' band. A couple of riders almost snapped their heads off. Bud Carroll, in the first heat of the 125 Amateur/Expert class came afoul of the band and the starter's ire; he was pUl back in row two and when the .sta rt er barely twitched Carroll came flying through again going for it , and only ended up being p Ul back again. He kept control in the semi and turned in a good race. Rob Pfetzing and Steven Karsten were in front with Carroll laying third , but on the last lap he made his move and won it. In the main . Rob Pfetzing went down in the shuffle up the hill for turn lWO. So a restart was ordered. Bobbing . and weaving. off they went again and you could have tossed that famous racing blanket over the from three, Kamen . Jay Bales and Carroll. 125 Novice Garth Beavers 10Sl his number plate at the start of his main - ma ybe that lillie bit less wind resistance helped him go so quickly and led the race right up 10 the last lap . As the white flag showed Ronnie Evans was righl up 10 Beavers' rear wheel. Dimly through the light glare we saw Beavers boggle wa y over in the back section and Evans came flying around ahead of him at the checkered. The 250 Amateurs had their excitement. SCOll Polson came up with the lowest number of overall points. Although Rob Selvy won two motos, his seventh in the second really gave Aim a gang of points he didn't want. The class had starting troubles 100. One rider (we won't tell w)lo) went charging at the elastic and really gOI hung up on it , but when he jumped, Dorothy Rowe went with him and they both gOI pu t back. The starter barely breathed and right from the back row the sa me gent leman came roaring through' again, again b reaking the barrier and this time falling down. The Gripsters had had it by this lime. and he had 10 start his race way back on the jump, ' The troubles weren 't over yet. Dorothy Rowe had her rear brake fall off third moto after coming out of the hole first and leading the gang ; something had been loosened up when she gOI off in the first moto, In rhe 250 Expert class . Budd Carroll on his new ex -john Hateley bike that really goes. just shot off the line in his heal and the semi. The racing was reall y good . especially second heal between Danny Perkins. Joe Steffan, Larry Bird and Carroll. Carroll look the semi with Bird second and off th ey all went for the main . Joe Steffan got OUl in from first and just stayed there while Larry Bird worked up 10 a third SPOI past Carroll 10 where he was hot after Perkins. Someone in that race got off in the rear section and finish was a lillie ragged as Steffan came around for the flag in a gaggle of slower riders ... pie plates riding expert . We hesitate 10 call it the highlight of the evening but it sure caused the most comrnotion: fence hanging of speClalors and unfortunately crowders-around on the track. It happened in the Open Expert class where slrange things rarely happen . First round uneventful. SIeve Loomis OUl front with Don Frauenberger going ha rd 10 gel by and pass Ed Steffan, Next rnoto it was Frauen berger leading it all the way , laying it down - o n the cases all around turn one, with SIeve Loomis second and Steffan third . . BUI third motol Steffan came off the line and gOI right OUI of shape. While Steffan was doing the fandango with his Yamaha, Frauenberger was almost by him and clear when Steffan finally came off his bike, managing to land half on the back of Frauenberger's and they both went down . Gripsters rushed . 10 unearth Frauenberger, who was under the mess 'a nd then shouts for wrenches in specific sizes rent the air. The chain had pulled his foot in and around and jambed it up between frame and fender . .. makes you squinch 10 think about that. doesn't it? But after necessary adjustments to Full Bores and bikes Frauenberger was off and running and out in front again . Right at the end , Steve Loomis, who was really charging, had his bike blow in turn one .. . and his feelings on that were clearly demonstrated - you could practically see a small angry cloud of grey smoke creeping out from under his helmet! • Resu lts in Results Section.
