CA ,JUNE26 Tragedy struck the Manning Racing-sponsored road race a t Willow Springs on Sunday. John Glover (Norto n) and his Mr. Jags teammate-Pat Eagan (Ric kman) wer e easily le ad in g t he 750 and Open Production race by a large margin . Suddenly third placer Pat Bea com's Kawa sak i slid out in one of th e tri cky uphill turns and Lee Fleming (K aw ). only a few feet behind, was unable to avoid the fallen rider. Since she wasn 't moving, Glover tried to ride between her and th e sid e of the road just as she decided to run out of the way . There was a collision, Glover fell off. and th e girl was rushed to the hospital with a nearly-severed leg that was feared might requi re amputation . Pat Manning convened a riders' meeting , blamed the ' crash o n disregard for th e ca ut ion flag . an d suspen d ed Glover and Eagan for "continuing to race under the yellow flag ."
