Rookie O'Mara winsAME 1.25 Pros By Lee Taylor VALENCIA, CA ,JUNE 10 For the second Friday night in a row , a rookie took the overall win for the 125 Pro class. Tonight it was John O'Mara's (Suz- 22 Al Baker) turn . In the first moto , Evan Marcus (Ya m- G ra n a da Yam) jumped into the lead with Jerry Shore (SuzCole Bros. ) in second, Bob Kline third and O'Mara fourth . Kline went down and O'Mara moved into third . Shore took over the lead. and heading into the white flag lap, O 'Mara was holding down second with Kirk Sturgeon , in his third pro race , running third . Marcus took a flying start the second time out with Shore right up behind him. O'Mara was holding down the number three spot with Rodney Morrison behind him. Shore dropped back, and O'Mara took over second. Jim Tassano (Suz -Syklop's Cycle Parts) was running fourth and moving up fast on Morrison . Morrison went down off the drop-off and Tassano, in third was pouring on the throttle, trying to catch O 'Mara , A fast and furious fight for third was going on between Kline and Tim Locey , right down to the wire, side by sid e , in an effort to take over. At the finish,line Kline started to lose control but regained and held onto fourth . The ch eckered brought O 'Mara home to his first overall. Tassano took down second and third went to Kline. Don Hansen (Yam -Int. MC) took control of the 500 Pro class with back to back wins . Leading in the first moto, he had Will Harper (Mai-Cole Bros .) in second and Monte McCoy (KTM -Mid-Valley) in third. While Hansen was pulling a bit of a lead everyone else was all packed together. McCoy came up alongside Harper and finally got by heading into the sweeper turn . A duel for fourth was taking place between Steve Rawson and Tom Claire. Claire came up inside Rawson and got by a long the fence line. Heading into the white flag lap, Claire was closing fast on Harper, coming up alongside on the drop-off and keeping the pressure on him . Claire, pressing a bit too hard , went down alongside the fencf line and was pushed back to fifth . By the end of the moto, Hansen held the lead . McCoy was still solid in second and HarRCr was holding third. The second time out , Hansen again pulled o ut in front of a congested pack of riders. McCoy moving into th e second place slot with Skeet Wyman behind him in third . Hansen still led , but not all that securely. McC oy had closed in slightly and W yman was falling back. Wyman had Harper and Claire behind him and they were go ing wildl Harper finally got by Wyman but it was still super tight between them as they finished their white flag lap , wheel to wheel over jumps, into turns and right down to the wire. The final checkered flag waved Hansen home to top money, McCoy took down second overall and third went to Harper. Results in Results Section. been spotted but Number 19 hadn't. Breker was in the lead and Roeseler had gone down on the back side of the six-mile course and now he had to play catch up from fifth place against a rider playing in his own park. The traffic was starting to get heavy, for the experts had set such a pace they were lapping riders on the second loop . Breker was flying and Roeseler was picking up a spot a lap but time ran out and it was Breker bringing it home. Jim Fishback had a nice Sunday ride even if it was a Monday as he blasted through the hills and sandwashes on his way to victory in the 125 Expert go . Fishback never had a serious challenge and seemed to be enjoying himself even if by this time the heat made just finishing a victory. For the Grand Finale, the team race started over 100 teams with the riders having to change every lap . The pits loo ked like a fire sale as people scurried around to set u p all the equipment they thought their teams might need in the next 90 minutes . Officials were busy with their own preparations as they stationed themselves to make sure the riders did make the necessary changes. The flag fell and Marty Miller was off first . John Gless took over for him on the second . Ia p , still in first place. Everything was going smoothly for the team until the sixth lap when Gless ran into trouble and the team of Danny Jean and Ken Taylor took over. The lead was short lived as Miller put his team back into first on the next lap and they took the checkered flag first. Results in Results Section. Wes Powell loo ks straight ahead while competing in AME's Youth Division. third with Blose back in the race again in fourth. Da llas was out of the hole first in the second moto. Ba tes was second, Blose third and Williams fourth. Dallas was really moving. Blose took over second, and Williams moved into third. Blose was moving to catch Dallas an d Williams was moving to catch Blose. Blose soon moved into first and was stretching a lea d with Dallas not far behind. Blose took the checkered flag with Dallas, Williams and Ba tes following. After the races there was exciting entertainment. Blose tops Avery's Kowboy Kountry KlubMX AME Youth Division team to beat By Debbi Pond By Judy Greenberg Roese/erat FLAGSTAFF , AZ, JUNE5 VALENC IA, CA , J U N E 10 Up in the cool pines of Flagstaff, a new track, made up of natural terrain was formed. One hundred riders participated in the grand Kevin Brewis captu re d a double win for first overall in the 83cc Stock Jun ior, 12 and over class, at A.M.E.'s Youth Division Fri - opening, 40 of which were from the Phoenix area. Twelve Phoenix 'expert s were there after racing the night before at Canyon Raceway in Phoenix. The 125 Experts were out of the gate first with Chappy Blose pulling his famous holeshor , Howard Dendy second and Kenny Bates at Dendy's rear wheel. Weaving in and out of tall pine trees, uphills, downhills, tight corners and a huge natural waterhole; it was a wheel to wheel battle for these' experts. At the end of the first lap Blose (Hon) was out by himself with a tremendous lead. The battle was then between Dendy (Yam) and Bates (Yam). Bates soon took Dendy for second but Dendy stayed close behind. The moto started with Bates pulling the holeshot and Blose and Dendy at his rear tire. The race was between Bates and Blose. with tires touching for two laps. Blose made a quick inside turn and took over first, working up a large lead. The race finished the same as the first moto with Blose first, Bates second , and Dendy third . The first. moto of the 250 Experts were off with Blose pulling the holeshot , Dan Wi lliams second , Kenny Dallas third and Kenny Bates fourth . Blose held it wide open to gain a large lead and Dan Williams had a large lead over third-place Dallas. Blose had minor bike problems and Williams movS! . t first Bates second. Dallas day night motocross at the Dunes. The riders thundered off the line with Mitch Cahoon (EI Monte Yamaha) in the lead . Cahoon spun out in the power turn, giving Mike Bess a chance at the lead. Brewis rode full throttle after Bess. getting by as they passed the gate, then pulling away from the pack. The action switched to a fight. for fourth between Don Kokinda and Steve Castro, who kept changing positions as they rocketed around the track. Kokinda wound up in front to go after Roger Finner, It was a race to the finish, with Firmer holding third. The second time out, Kokinda was first out of the gate, but overshot the berm heading for the tower. Not being able to get back on the course without endangering the pack as they passed, Kokind a was forced to fall into the first open position of seventh. Bess again found himself in front, but Brewis wasn't about to let him keep it , and had the lead to himself by the end of the first lap. Steven Sedillo passed Firmer to finish third. while Kokinda was milking a nice recovery moving up to fourth for the finish . A hot Junior Cycle J u nior rider is Brian Eckess (Shoemaker's Cycle). who has been bringing home wins pretty regularly, As the first moto of this modified race got underway. Bud d y D u m o (Pesky's Suzuki) had the holeshot. Eckess was out in front Dr. Pepper, Breker R.A.C~E. GP By Elaine Jones CO RONA, CA, MAY 30 Memorial Day dawned warm with the promise of it becoming downright hot. The rider turnout was much higher than the R .A .C ,E. promoters anticipated over 600 riders on hand to see what the much advertised "corkscrew" was all about. Over a month in the making, the "co rkscrew" could best be described as a clover leaf on ' the freeway . The riders entered the "co rkscrew" from the north , going underground and having to bank sharply to the left as they came out in a sweeping turn that brought them back over the top. The race that everyone was anxious to see was the Open Expert event. Larry Roeseler was on hand along with Goat Breker (who has always been the rider to beat at Corona). Breker had gotten into the mood of the proceedings by taping a Dr. Pepper ca n to the top of his helmet, since Dr. Pepper soft d rinks was one of t he sponsors. Seventeen experts took their places on the starting line - deadengine, straddling the front wheel. The flag fell with Roeseler getting the jump and Breker in second. For the first two laps the order remained the same but on lap three the rumble started. " H as Roeseler come by yet?" J:he D.r. Pep'~ can of Breker had MXaneasy Brewis win
