Harley-Davidson asks government action against Japanese manufacturers I • • =s t WASHINGTON . D.C. Harley-Davidson Motor Co . . Inc. has filed a petition with the U.S . Treasury Department ac cusing Japanese motorcycle manufacurers of illegally " d u J.T1 p i ng·~ hundreds of th ousands of motorcycles in the United States. The petition said that H onda . Yamaha . Kawa saki and Suzuki a re, to varying degrees , selling motorcycles il} the United States at prices as much as 58 percent below those being charged for the same motorcycles inJapan and Europe. Such practices are prohibited by the Antidumping Act of 1921. Harley-Davidson. th e onl y American motorcycle manufacturer and a subsidiary of AFM Incorporated. said Japanese dumping practices had seriously affected the company by unduly eroding its share of heavyweight motorcycle sales in the United States and by effecti vely preventing it from establishing U.S. production of lightweight and middleweight motorcycles. . The petition compared prices of 1977 Honda . Yamaha. Kawasaki and Suzuki motorcycles in Europe and Japan with those in the United States and showed consistently lower U.S . prices by differences of as much as $737 per unit. John A. Davidson. President of Harley-Davidson, told reporters that Harley-Davidson is seek ing healthy international trade and competition . not protectionism.
