In doing so, Faust gave up valuable ground, b ut it didn't seem to matter to him ; someone was down a nd co uld be hun. A spectator, Joe Erler, saw what had happened and was so impressed by the display of good sponsmanship that he gave flagger Buzzy Croft a little rewa rd for Faust. Mark Rodman (Mai) holeshot the first race of the 500 Pros. Roben Marino, T.J. Warren and Steve Russell followed. Warren whipped by Marino and began his assault on Rodman. Richee Collins (KTM) and Ron Tebbs (Hus) kept ahead of Cole Bros. Maico rider Clark Jones. As the leaders were coming out of the' gully Warren blitzed by Rodman for first place. Marino, Russell, Tebbs and Carl Gieselman (Yam) crossed the finish line next. Russell was off the line and going first in the second moto. He was able to keep the lead away from Warren,for only a few laps. Warren, Marino . Russell, Doug Boyd (Suz) and Chip Howell (Hus) finished the race ahead of the other riders and went home with most of the cash. • Resu lts in R esu lts Section. Smith inherits 250 ProsatCRC DeAnza By Ron Lawson o n a R ed la n d s Suz uki machine. Ba ld win held the lead until about the middle of the race, when he began to tire and let Ha lverson by . For the rest of the race, Baldwin struggled to ho ld off Bill Petras (Hon) , but finally fin ished in second . In the last race , the positions once more switched around . . Petras got the ho leshot, but was passed shortly by Kavin Bowden (Hon) . Ba ld win held third until he dropped out of the race with difficu lties. Halverson then began to pressure Petras. He got by, but cou ldn't catch Bowd en , who had built up a good lead. They finished with three lapped riders between them. Once the points were tallied, Halverson was on top. Petras took second place honors ahead of Bowden. 250 Intermediate Dave Ohl (Suz) proved he could really cut his way through the pack. 'In both motes he started way in the back, but it just didn't bother him . With amazing smoothness, O hl pushed his way to the leaders and passed them all with half the race to spare. MA Y 25 SUNNYMEAD, 'CA , MAY 22 When California Racing Club (CRC) pays their monthly visit to DeAnza Cycle Park , they always bring good racing, excitement 34 Brian Myerscough came blasting around the start turn in the second moto . Terry Shekell (Yam). Broc Glover, Cliff Lett and Pete Wanket filled the next slots. Glover managed to outmaneuvc;r Myerscough to take the lead and the overall win. Gi bson , who got a less than perfect start finished the race in thi rd wit h Shekell, Lett, Wanket and Wankel finishing the race in the next places . Ti m Welker (Suz) grabbed the hoJeshot in bot h of the 250 Pro races. In the first he led for ha lf a la p before Jon Derf-larnmer (Mon) smoked by. DerHammer, . by the halfwa.,y point had what seemed to be an unbearab le lead, Then the brake lining came off the rear shoes, locking th e bike up . Jim Gibson (Bas) went right to the lead position , "\i'JI J ,!"~Iar .( Y.a ~ ) , . ,A} ,\n Smith (Hus) , Marty Miller and Dallas Baker Kawasaki rider Kevin Rodgers began working on changing their spot. Smith systematically bumped all but .the leader. Welker stayed in third place to the end of the race. Tolar and Miller followed him under the checkers. Jeff Vidic got an awful surprise, when a bee flew into his face and stu ng him in t he eye-lid , To quote Jeff, "It's pretty ha rd to ride with only · one eye ," After getting the ho leshot in the secon d moto We lker was quickly dispatched by Jim Gibson . Alan Smith came through t r a ffic so capture second. Welker, Jonas Gaaf (Yam) , and Wes Sutton (Mai) finished next. Who ever said that it doesn't pay to be a good sport? Du r ing the 125 Intermediat.e.!ac!' Andy Faust stopped and some surprises. The 250 Pros had all three this time . Greg Stone (Yam) seemed to have everything under control in the first moto. He let Chris Burgeson (Suz) lead for the first lap , then stole the position and took off. Scott Smith was moving his Ossa through the pack and also got around Burgeson, Smith couldn't catch Stone, but stayed in second for the rest of the rnoto. In the next 250 Pro episode, Stone looked like a sure winner once more , He was way out front for most of the race, but as he came into the fina l laps, his bike's chain gave up . The lead then fell int o Smith's la p , as well as the overall victory. Bu rgeson got seco nd and a disappointed Stone was . third. Open Pros saw David Ho pkins (Hus) and Tom Taylor both win one. The overall went to Taylor, The 125 Intermediates had a similar twist of events. Danny Burtt took the first moto with litt le pressu re from Tom Ha lverson (Suz) . In round two . Burtt was way back in the pack whi le Brandon Ba ld win enjoyed the holeshot A custom of Corona Wednesday racing- has been for a large group of riders to turn up at the local pizza parlor and swap bench race stories. Wayne Rainey and Danny Perkins took home the dough and probably dropped a good portion of it at the after-race get-together. Rainey set his sights on the Money half mile, scratching out' of the short track to put his eggs all in one basket. It was Steve Fonune who made him work for it as he came off the line first on his big 750 Yamaha . Rainey was second and Perkins third , On the second lap , a downed rider caused Fonune to go high and wide and Rainey slipped his quicker two -stroke underneath and took the lead , On lap three Perkins tried the same trick and got the same resu lts. It turned into a race of strategy as Ra iney and Perkins cl ung to the slim lead and tried to prevent Fonune from getting t he power charge on the straigh ts that eats up the two strokes. It worked and as the checkered came out it was Ra iney, Perkins and Fonune. -T he Money short track was Perkins' from the drop of the flag , He got out quick and starred flyi-ng , making seco nd place Terry Singleton work just to keep him in sight.
