Kelly Larive (M ai) moved into t hird , Da l Cooley (Yarn) a nd Br ett H anna h (Ma i) slippe d into fou rt h and fifth . T he lead of the race was Crawford 's 'til th e chec kers ca me out. McCart y and Larive hung onto second and th ird , H a n n a h fin all y m anaged to take Cooley on th e last lap for the fou rth slot. Keith Lamparrer (Ya m), who crashed in th e fir st rnoto was out of th e running, grabbed the second moto holeshot , followed by McCarty a nd Cool ey. Crawford , in fourth, had som e ca tc hing up to d o; ope ned it up and by lap three again had the lead under co nt ro l. Lari ve had m oved from fifth to third , b eh ind Lamparter , with su r p ri sing ease . La yn e and Br e tt Hannah were fifth and sixth , Larnparter was holding a good steady second behind Crawford. T hey were far a he ad of th e cha os going on beh ind the m, a nd I was totally unaware of what was happening. It seem s McCarty and Larive were doing'a little track cu tt ing , a nd were ultimatel y d isqualifi ed. The moto wins thus went to Crawford, Lam parter , La yne and . Brett Hannah . Craw ford took - t he overa ll with two firsts, Br ett Hanna h , seco nd (4-4), Cool ey, thi rd (5-5) a nd Layne Hannah , fourth (8 -3) . Yamaha -mounted Steve Ya rb ro ugh pu lled the holesh ot in th e first 125 Pr o rnoto , with J ohn 1mb r ia le ( Ya m) , An d y Fro la ( Hon) , ' a nd Da ve Cra wford ( Hon) ho t on wheel. Yarbrou gh drop ped his pace on la p fo ur and Imbr ial e to ok ove r first , holding down th at position for th e rest of the race. Nex t tim e a round, Fro la a nd Crawford had passed Yarbrou gh to ta ke ove r seco n d a n d th ird , Crawford stuck to Frola's rear wheel for two more laps, th en finall y found th e line around him to move into second . Imbriale , never challenged for th e le ad , to ok th e checkers first , followed by C ra wfo rd, Fr o la , and Yarbrough . Yarbrough again grabbed th e hol eshot second moto, with the same three ch a rgi ng down on him , By la p three , Craw ford had taken th e lead , reel ed in lap after lap , n ever cha llenged . Im bria le was putting th e pressure on Yarbrough , with Frol a and Gary Dircks ( Ya m) not fa r behind . Coming into th e b a ck stra ig h t a way , Imbri al e got a round Yarbrough , ta king over second . Dircks dosed on a nd finally pa ssed .both Frola and Yarbrou gh . (Dirc ks cras hed first rnor o and wa s out o f t he ove ra ll ru n ning .) When the che ckers went out it was Cra wfor d , Imbriale , Dircks, and Frol a . Taking hom e th e overall cas h were Cra wford , Imbria le, Fr ola , a nd . Yarbroug h. The 250 Pros had a tough time getting their first moto underway. It took two resta rt s - the first due to problems with th e ga te, the second due problems with a gate jum per! Crawford was the cu lprit, an d fou nd himself posi tio ned backwards at th e fina l drop of th e ga te . Chappy Blose (Mai ) smoked o ff the g ate firs t , showi ng no lost zap after several weeks off with leg inj uries. He held off h ard cha rges from Jimm y W right (Mai ), Andy Frola (Mai) and J ohn lmbriale (H us) . Aft er the uphill on lap three . Blose took a hard fall , gi ving the lead to W right. Crawford , sta rt ing dead last , banzaied through the packed to pa ss eve rybody but Wright! Lap five sa w Imbria le put th e move on Frola to take over thi rd and ho ld it to th e chec kers. T he holeshot in moto two action went to Frol a with Crawford hot on his wheel. Third was Dave Nels on (Ma i), braving his first Pro race , with Blose dose behind. Before the firs t lap was . over, Crawford had sc oote d past Frola , Blose moved to th ird and Imb riale took fourth. By the th ird lap, Blose had c r as h ed, Imbrial e had worked his way around Frola int o seco nd, and Crawford was long gone in first. Wright , maneuv ering his wa y through the pack from a bad sta rt, stuc k him self to Frola 's wheel in fourth place. O n lap nine , W right 'S openi ng ca me and he bu zzed Frola to take over thi rd . One lap later, Crawford cruised u nder the chec kers wit h ease to finish first, followed in order by Imbriale , Wright , and Frola . Crawford had cha lked up his third and last Pro win for t he night. Second overall went 10 Wright , with Imbriale a nd Frola third and fourth. • Results in Results Section . Taylor 8ros. take DeAnza By Ron Lawson SUNNYMEAD, CA , MAY 29 Rick and Ken Taylor , as always, despite th e best efforts of Danny McDougal (Suz) and Steve Montague (Bul). In moto one, Dave Ohl (Su i) , who was running his first pro ra ce , got the holeshot , Montague wa s ' still unaccustomed to his new ride and was . out of contenti on because of an extremely poor start. As th ey came around for lap two , Ohl had given the lead to McDougal , who began to open it up . Taylor then passed O hl a lso , Mc Dougal's lead was growing greater with each lap and even Taylor didn't have much chance of reeling him in. The race ended with Mc Dougal ahead of the open class macliines as wel l as the 250s. N ext time around, Gregg Stone (Yam) was first to tum ' one, . wit h . Mc Dougal right behind. W ith in three laps , however, the flying Suzuki p ilot had secured the lead for himself. O n lap six , Taylor moved into a distant second. All this tim e , Montague was hard at work making up for another crummy start. H e was not yet close enough to ch alle nge th e leaders, but . he was on the g as and it was a long ra ce. McDougal , who was up with the o~n cla ssers agai n , made a serious m istake on the ninth lap . While racing against th e b igger bikes, he crashed a nd was run over by Da ve Hopkins ' 360 Husky. First place was no w in the hands of T aylor. but Montague was dosing in fast. The ra ce ca me do wn to the wjre with Taylor a hea d until the very last lap , wh en he let the Bultaco of Mo nt ague ge t by. Taylor's scores were g oo d for the overa ll victory. Montague , was in second ahead of Keith Patt en (Yam) a nd Ohl. Ken Taylor (Yam ) had a n eq ua lly suc cessfu l day in the Open Pro class . In his first moto , he was unchallenged, but in the seco nd round , Mark Sullivan (Suz) got the ho leshot. Before th e first lap was com plete, however, Sullivan was involved in a big pile-up , letting Taylor and Hopkins go on to first and second . . • Results in Resu lts Section , Glover takes CMC J.25 Pro win from Myerscough By Patti Trotter O RANGE, CA , MAY 29 Team Flying Machine Factory came screaming around Webco Hill before the rest of the 30-rider pack of 125 Pros . Gregg Toyama led the parade, next came Cliff Lett and Yamaha's Br oc Glover: Brian Myerscough (R &D), Mike Pillar (Suz) , and Mike " Little" Tripes (Yam) had a head start on Bassett rider Jim Gibson . Toyam a stayed at th e front of the pack until he blew the engine on his Honda . Myerscough moved in to the lead whe re he remained for the duration of the m oto . Gi bson got to fifth only to be . displaced by Pete Wanket (Yam), J oh n Tessitore, who had started the race way 10 the rear worked his way to fourth place by midpoint. Myerscough and Glove r kept a good distance between themselves and the other riders . Lett sta yed in third with Tripes , Tessitore , Wanket following . 33
