One of the most exciting races of the day was the 0·83cc Pros. It was Matt Whiting's race from beginning to end . He rode like a mini ' tornado! In the first moto , M att charged off and set up a- big lea d over Jim Holley and his brother A.J . Whiting. Holley kept pushing Matt but couldn't get by. A .J. was closing fast on Holley a nd finally got by him . The seco nd moto found Malt again in the le a d but with some h eavy pressure from Holley. A.J. was holding in tight trying to tak e sec ond from Holley but couldn't quite make it by. A.J. developed bike trouble and Jim a nd Matt pulled aw ay from him. The third inoto fou nd A.J. back on th e lin e ready to make up for the DNF he got in his second rnot o . A .J. and Holley we re on ea ch other 's backs throughout this entire mow. Matt was running in third, trying desperately to get by his brother for a crack at Jim . A.J. and Jim kept trading first pla ce ba ck a nd forth throughout th e whole mow, but in the last lap in the tower turn, A .J. got by Holley for a first. Brandand Darling batfle tor CRCmoney By Ron Lawson SU N N YMEA D , CA ,JAN. 23 CRC had n't held a race at De Anza in over two months, so everyone came out and had a day of fun and good racing. Rodney Brand and Butch D arl in g , b ot h riding for Holiday Hond a , had q uite a battle for supremacy of the 125 P ro class. ' O u t of the hole, Darling was sharing the lead with Scott Sheedy (Hon), but by the second lap. Sheedy fell back and Brand tookover the number two spot . Da rling , however, di dn't want to gi ve his position to anyone. He maintained a n impressive pace. even as he bega n to la p slower riders. Brand was flying as well, but it didn't look as though he were ga ining any ground. It was on the eighth lap that he got his lucky break. Darling co llided with another rid er : who he was trying to lap , leaving first place open. Brand h ad no problem in winning the mow, as second-place Mark Barnes (KTM) was q uite a way b ack. Darling finished fo urth. In the second mow , Darling and B rand were at it again , this time much closer, Darling, who had a slight edge, was trying to get away, but Brand wouldn't give an inch . The two Honda pilots seemed almost inseparable. Two laps before the finish , Brand managed 10 get by , but his lead was short- lived. O n the last lap , Darling stubbornly repassed his rival and took the second (This story continued on page 30) 125 Novice lett waiting; Walton wins on the restarted 0.37 TT By Maureen Lee ELSINO RE, CA ,JAN. 23 Once the early morning fog had cleared and riders cou ld see where to turn left , the Jackrabbits M.C. turned 'em loose on yet another version of the Elsinore track. The starting line was in the infield and bot h the riders and th e starter had troubles with each other. The 125 Novice main was red flagged after five laps for a re -start after a rider left on the line complained long and loud enough 10 get some action . At that , point Ron Evans had taken the lead away from Rob Selvy and in th e restart neither co uld ge t quite ' 'th a t far u p front again . Tony Walton , once he got the lead , just ran away with it . Mike - Paulson had second for a while but Randal Howard and Ron Evans came moving right on up along and passed • him. In the 250 Novice main, Rob Selvy took the lead wit h Calvin Wangrud in second. As the laps progressed up cam e Mike Baed er through the pack with Jack Smith after him until Baeder and Selvy were doing some side-by-side racing. Baeder finally got the lead and the leaders shuffled places u ntil it was Baeder, Selvy , Smith and Scott Polson in the fourth spot . By the time the flag ca m e down Selvy was stuck in traffic and unable to ge t another chance at passing Baeder back. Joe Steffan took three straight 250 Junior ·m otos. In the first round he came charging through turn one pushing and working on the front en d of his Yamaha for all it was worth and he smoked the rest of the talent in that class: Mik e Tidwell d id the same 'th in g to th e other Experts. although Larry Bird had hi s ta ns ye ll in g and sc rea m in g in th e seco n d mot o especia lly. when he re a lly g u nned his Montesa almost 10 th e breaking point on hi s way 10 second . Despit e laying hi s new TT500 Yammie down in front of the whole pack in t he se co n d moto , Kelly Templeton still end ed up winning th e co m b ined 500 /0pen Novice class. Mike Montgomery is on his way to transferring to Expert by winning the Junior 5 00 / 0pen although Steve Loomis really m ade him work , and keep his m ind on things in the last moto . W e didn't get a name on the pie plate " I" for the Exp ert big· bore class but he was sure going hot and heavy , m ixing it up with the sta rs o f. th at cla ss, Bobby Sanders, Don "Tv Bo ne" Grigsb y a nd Don Fr auenberger .
