ILeft) DG 's Dave Taylor. chasing Jennings, Jennings, Turner, and Mosier win Bosch big-money at CMC Saddleback By Patti Trotter ORANGE, CAL.,JAN. 30 Over 3,500 spectators cheered on 400-plus riders - including national stars Jimmy Weinert, Tommy Croft. Marty Smith, Rex Staten, Marty Tripes , Gaylon Mosier , and others -out to capture their share of the $3 ,000 purse at this CMC/Robert Bosch Spark Plugssponsored motocross. Due to the large number of riders, qualifying heats were run with the first eight in each heat going to the final. Every slot was taken on ' the line as the first 125 Pro race got ready . Team Honda's newest rider, Warren Reid, dominated the entire race. Greg Toyama (FMF) Ron Turner (FMF) Pete Wanket (Hon) and Chuck Bower (Hon ) followed Re id and his Honda Red Racer. With one lap to go in the moto Turner began to put the. mov.es . '-. on Toyama to re-arrange the positions , but as team FMF ca me blasting into th e last turn Ron was unable to get by . Second heat of the 125s had another FMF Rocketrnan , Cliff Lett literally exploding down the start hill for the lead. By lap two Kurt Sofka (Yam) and Jeff Jennings (Suz) managed to push Lett.back to third . Sofk a held the lead for two mor e laps whe n Jennings flew by to capture first . DG H otshoe David Taylor scrambled to the front of the pack , and by the time th e checkers went out he was second. Jeff Jennings sm oked th e pack from th e hol esh ot in th e final m oto , with Cliff Lett , Da vid Taylor , Gr eg Toyama and Pete Wanket in pursuit. In the third la p Wanket got by Lett who had already been bumped to th ird by Taylor. Warren Reid worked his way to fifth from a tenth place start. In the next lap Reid was out for the day with major mechanicals. More position changes -at' the half wa y point it was Jennings , Taylor , Wanket , Bobby Jones, Danny Turner (FRA) and Radical Ron Turner. First Danny Turner, then Ron Turner, passed Jones for the onl y other change in the moto standings. Winner Jeff Jennings took home a very healthy check. In the first heat on e of the 250 Pros Wes Sutton (Mai) was off the line first, leading Danny (Magoo) Chandler (KTM), Ron Turner, Robert Elliott and Tim Tolar down t he hill. Chandler took over 'the lead but surrendered it when his rear 'e nd washed out and he went down. Turner took over with Sutton and Elliott in the second' and third slots. Chandler got restarted and as th e laps checked off, had bumped all but th e leader, Turner. Top finishers were Turner, Chandler, Sutton, Elliott , Tolar and Jon DerHammer. Bill Rubly (Mai) , Val Tamietti (Mai) Marty Tripes (H-D) and Tommy Croft (Hon) were the other stars of this race. Tripes and his Harley moved from a fourth place start to second. Mike Bell worked his way through traffic for third. Rubly , Tamietti and Croft finished with the four to six slots . As the twenty-four 250 Pro fina lists came down th e start hill , Bill Rubly was leading the parade with Bell and Turner sharing the glory. Clark Jones (CBS) and Tim Lunde (Mai) put themselves between Marty Smith and the leaders. Tommy Croft and Tim Tolar tangled wheels and Tommy's CR got the worst of it , forcing him to retire .On th e back stretch Bell clanged Rubly to take over the lead , but not for long. The Fantasti c Flyer Turner was dialed . H e obv iously wanted the lead and he got it. Lunde and Smith pushed Rubly back to fourth. Ga ylon Mosier and his Marvelous Maico came to tak e ca re of business. When Stu Peters dropped the gate, Ga ylon was gone, both motos. First moto Va l Tamietti (Mai) was second and Rex Staten (H -D) , who had gotten a seven th place start, was third. Chuck Sun (H us) and Jon DerHammer (Mon) got a di ce going over fourth /fifth , with DerHammer th e eventual winner. In th e second moto the top three were Mosier, Tamietti , and Rich Thorwaldson. Bernie Schreiber headed an Expert exh ibition after the trial for rid ers . spectators, two sun crazed prospectors and one .slightly inebriated coyote: Bernie was warming up for th e two or three world rounds he 'll ride for Bultaco beginning in late February. Visitor Bill Ernmisson .: a British importer of American accessories, got his first taste of American body English, He kept asking what the fine , dusty substance on the ground was, where the mud should be . With Schreiber abstaining from the Expert class, Ray Soffa edged aboutto -become-AT A-Expert Keith Feland for the top class honors . Simi Sherpaman Barry McMahan headed , up the Amateurs while Jon Montgomery topped the Novices . Mark Bernbaum did likewise in the kids ' class . Amongst th e Beginners, Bill Throckmorton edged out Ichabod Inman's cousin , Sal Santangelo, by a single marker. But Ichabod didn't lose his head over it.
