Results in Results Sectio n . Fortune wins money at Corona half mile By Elaine Jones CORONA. CAL. ,JAN . 19 Serious racing prevailed at the night flattrack at Corona. . boy was there some racing. The first inkling of things to come came 18 in the Open Expert Half Mile , th e preliminary to th e Money race. Off th e line ccame Dan McWhorter with Eddie Lawson in hot pursuit. In .the ten laps that followed Lawson tried everything shorr of firing a gun to get around McWhorter, pulling almost even with him coming out of turn four only to have the door shut on him. It was a race of frustrations for Lawson and smart moves by ~cWhorter who came up with thewin . Dylan Neihart was third . Nine riders lined up to go for the dough a nd th ey had twenty laps ahea d of th em th a t ca lled for som e plannin g a nd pacing . Steve Fortune planned to - a nd did -get ou t on top fas t a nd put as m u ch space as he co u ld between him self a nd th e rest of the field . McWhorter was right behind him in second looking for back-to-hack wins . Gordie Kidd , Wayne Rainey, and Mike Tidwell rounded out the top five. By la p two , Kidd had moved into second ' with Ra iney in third and Lawson on the move in fourth . A fall on lap three made it necessary for a single-file restart and it was another change in the cast of characters with Kidd in the lead when they came by. Fortune in second and Lawson still moving up in third. Kidd was able to hold it for three laps before problems struck him down and Fortune , Lawson and Rainey went by. The status quo held until lap 15 wh en Rainey got by Law son briefly for second. It came down to a two-man race with Laws on closing in on Fortune as th ey ca me down to th e wire. At th e fla g it was d ecided by th e wid th of a tire a nd it was Fort une's tire th at gotthere first . Ra in ey was third . Rainey's riding Kid d 's "For Sa le" bike proved th at you cou ld n't go too wrong buying it wh en he led th e sho rt trac k Money-race from sta rt to finis h. Mike T idwell had a solid second and Fortune mad e a pass on Dylan N eihart to come up third . Mike T idwell kept his track record by leading the sh ort track and th e ha lf . mil e wire to wire. Matt James and Neihart were two , three in the short track b ut swapped places on the half . mil e . Chris Choisser earned a transfer to Amateur as he got the nod in both the Short Track and Half Mile 250 cc Novice goes . Todd Brown. th e 125cc Expert oval specialist , socked it to Mike Paulson on the short track and the half. mile. Eddie Tafoya did th e same in th e 125cc Novice Class, topping Jim Kesler on th e short track and Shawn Pettis on th e half mil e . Bobby Garabedi a n was th e only . ot her d ouble winner as he cla imed both Mini classes in a ha rd fou ght d uel wit h R odn ey Rainey . G reg Nelson too k th e Division II short track from Brad Roach . nool had two 250 Pro hol eshot s and two seconds f or the CMC TIm Marsh Car lsbad day. Dave Johnson got by Neihart within two laps and went on to win the Open Amateur/Expert short track. N eihart held on to the second u ntil the fifth lap when Rich Warren took over. He held on for three laps, before Gary Pettis made the last pass and was able to hold off R ay Love ll who came from off th e pace to second. • Messer, McKee and Myerscough takeCMC CarlsbadMX Honda-mounted Chuck Bower got off the line first to lead the 125 Pro class around the track for all but three laps . Brian Myerscoligh (Sua) managed to sneak by the leader but Bower had other thoughts and took back first place. After Bower and Myerscough crossed u n d e r . the checkers , Arden Had ley (VH) finished . In moto two it again was Bower getting the holeshot. Hadley. Myerscough and Bower took turns lead ing th e pa ck until Myerscough took over for good and got the overall win . Bower and Steve Bartley (DG) also took home money. Luke Messer and Dale Anderson ,both on Maicos, showed th eir rear wheels to th e other riders. Anderson was cre d ited for th e win in the first moto a nd Messer garnered first place points in th e se cond go around. Messer was awarded the first overall, Anderson second and Jeff Witherell (Mai) third . Tim Marsh (Suz) went two for two in holeshots in t he 250 Pros. After leading the parade for several laps, Tim su rrendered the lead to a brand new Pro (this was his first Pro race) , Ro cky McKee (MCA). Rocky kept his machine wide open to cross the finish line first . Marsh and his Suz uki were second and Richa rd Kastner (Bul) third . Moto two was -a n instant replay of the first start. Kawasaki -mounted Bob Brown was closest to Marsh as th ey went into the first turn. McKee sta rt ed to pu t the moves on th e leaders u nt il h e flash ed by Ma rsh and captured th e lea d a nd got th e win . Marsh aga in too k second a nd Brown was third . Mon ey went to th ose th ree riders . Toyama toasts 'em, Derhammer roasts 'em and Yorba roosts 'em atECRAMX By Rex Reese TRABUCO CYN . , CAL. . JAN . 23 Wit h everyb o dy . u p . a t Sac ramento for the big bucks motocross up there, you'd think that it would be easy pickings for any Experts whe n it would come to a money-cross. right? Right. Greg Toyama (FMF) , J ohn Derhammer (Mon) , and Mike Yorba (Suz) found out that showing up at Racing World's $1000 motocross would be almost as easy as stealing. Almost. Most of the cash went to Toyama , who cleaned up th e sm all -bore cla sses: th e rest went to Derhammer in th e 250 Pros, and Yorba in th e O pen Pros. -, T oyama entered a br ace of FMF tu ned Hon d as in the 100 a nd 125 P ros and blew everybody' else ' into ·t he
