Itsecond jnoto repeat sewed it up for ~ him , Robin Co nstance (Yam) and Walter ' Drake (Hus) were 1·2 in the first moto for Jr. honors. Walter came back with- a win to take top brass, Mid pack starts plagued both rnoto' winners in the 125 Jr. class. Ken Solso (Yam) led the entire first moto , then a bad start in the second race kept him back to fifth at t he flag. Jim Scott (Suz) had his bad start and sixth place. finish out of the way when he won the final rnoto. Joe Shyduick (Hon) was first overall with consistant third place scores. Both Mini motos were a 1:2-3 repeat of David Ormsby, T.J. Landis and Wade' Anton - all on Yamahas. One mother of a very young rider came up wit h a unique way of spurring him on . Dirt Palace By Dorde Woodruff SALT LAKE CI TY , Ut, OC T . 16 Local dirt track freaks who find the winters long can patronize Rick Jones' seri es of sho rt track ,:vents in the Dirt Palace. The old 32 sta te fairgrou nds Coliseum was so nicknamed in contrast to th e elegant recen tly-built Salt Palace dow ntown . Iron Poni es M IC from H ill AFB hel ped Rick with th e meeting . Dirt tra ck ha s ra rel y been held indoors in the area and both Iron Ponies a nd Rick lea rn ed a lot. The first meeting was monitored by th e EPA , which found (barely) accept able levels of ai r pollution . This in spite of the ceiling fans deciding to malfunction be tween Saturday morning a nd eveni ng . Bikes had to run synt het ic oi l a nd be adequa tely muffled . At first he t ho ught it woul d be too big for the tinv Dirt Pal ace tr a ck , b ut hand led it wit'h evident ca re a rid precision to win th e Open Expert class . Danny Max well and Steve Powell were righ t beh ind Best in the last hea t bu t he kept th em bloc ked . In th e first hea t of th e 250 Exp ert class, misha ps plagued the A group so Rick and th e Iron Ponies found that the date must be chose n more carefu lly. A hocke y ga me in th e Sa lt Pal a ce a nd a desert meeting west of Sa lt Lak e .the next day provided strong com peti tio n for spec ta tors and rid ers. An effort will be made to attrac t riders fro m ot he r sta tes . Track is growing in Uta h . Turkeys Flock to Mt. View By Jan Newm an SANDY , ORE. , OCT. 17 Though Thanksgiving is not yet here there was an abundance of Turkeys today. Many of them came more appropriately equipmuch tha t Robert Howard was seco nd even tho ugh he sto ppe d dead once . The B group found Jim East dici ng wit h Danny Lechten berg . In the second A heat KIm Best srarted well bu t fell on his hea d . (Kim is second to father Bob in po int s but says he has tr ou ble with tight rracks.) In th e B third heat Dave Waym ent stayed a head of East this time. East . a fte r unsucessfull y trying to pass insid e .a n d outside , fell j ust befor e th e finish . In th e O pe n Am a teur class first hea t sudden ly th e worl d became very noisy as Kevin Murp hy lost his silencer. Bob Best , well equi pped wit h a welder on t he scene. repaired it for him be tween hea ts. Kevin , whose nigh t it was not. then ha d a bad fall in th e next heat. In the t hi rd heat Carv Russell was first , Lou Mele second , ' an d Bob LaFleu r th ird, finishing the same in th e cla ss, ped and attired for th e desert than motocross . Indeed , th e leader of th e first moto (astri de a desert tanked steed) lea ped out front like he was headed for th e smoke bomb until he did a 180 0 -laydown' in the first barrel turn. Mercifully his number was ob scured. Ed Po rtello (Ya m) and Stan Gaunt (Rok) became the front men a t tha t point arid that's where th ey wer e whe n th e ra ce was stopped aft er one of the flock flew over th e bars and broke a drumstick , Ted Bottemiller grabbed th e lead in the second moro but was for ced to ret ire whe n his CZ began to dis integra te. Steve . Buck (Ya m) inherited the lead 'an d held it to th e en d . Portello edged Buck out of a firs t overa ll wit h a 1-5 record. The O ld T imers' sch ed ule .of roving point races brought th em to Mt. View toda y, a lso. Their ra ce was combined With club promoted races, especially motocross, getting increasingly scarce in the area it was refreshing to see such a suc cessful" event as that put on by the Sacramento Jammers M /C . The rid ers , remembering past Jammers events, must have anticipated another good one, for 350 riders and 550 spectators arrived . The biggest race of the day began 2 when 35 250 Experts , blasted off th e line. It was no surprise to see Magoo (Danny Chandler) take the lead and keep his KTM way out front for a clean win in the first 'rnoro . .Dennis Brand (Suz) from Oakhurst chased Magoo for most of the race while Darrell Shultz (Bul) and Kipp Classen (KT M) diced it for third. Finally Shultz made the big mov e .just before the white flag and not only flashed past Classen, but went on to take Brand as well : Finishing fifth was Jim Lesniewski on a brand 'new Suzuki. who wasn 't looking up to par. Lesniewski look ed more natural leading the second moto until . again just before the white flag , Shultz turned it on and took over the lead. Magoo had been bouncing around in the top five positions the whol e race but seemed to be ha ving problems keeping the bik e under him. He d id manage a second by go ing around Lesniew ski in the last seconds of, the race . This time Bob Muers (W M) was fourth and Classen fifth . The eight to y cash in .were ; Shultz, Magoo , Lesniewski, Classen, . Myer s, Allen Berluti (Hus) , Dan Waller (Suz ), and Rick Woodson (Hus). Lesni ewski , also riding 125 class on , his Husky , was th e big winner in both motos. Without ben efit of holeshot either time, he worked his way to th e front a nd held it. Fini shing seco nd bo th tim es was Mike Preston (Suz) . Kipp Classen picked up more 'money in th e O pen class with a clea n swee p :d .
