Spurl oc k did it th e h ard way , burning a ch ec k on th e first loop wh ich was geared towards the C enduro riders, drop p in g t wo points in one fell swoop . "I thought that put m e out of it," he said, "bu t I pushed on h oping to at least salvage a top ten fini sh. " The cha llen ging second loo p led to th e downfall of the rest of th e competition whil e Sp url ock dropped a solita ry point ' at check G, arr iving a scant eigh t sec o nds la te. Deser t racer Mark Heac ox gave Tom his closest chal lenge , dropping four points. Mark rode wi th Honda's Jay Tullis who regained the lightweight class poin ts lead with a fourth overall, first ligh tweigh t, Jay dropped five poin ts to dominate his class and KTM mounted Dave Matus p icked up sec o nd ' ligh twe igh t after droppin g nine points. Matus was a B rid er until this enduro , but he opted to enter as a n A, therefore au tomatically transferring to A status according to AMA rules. UEA started the rider s off by skill level. A ri ders took number 1·29, B riders 30·74 and C's brought u p the rear. Some A riders elected to ride back with their B buddies , and a few later regretted the move. Passin g slo wer riders turned out to be a real problem at times on the challenging course.
