Down the san d w';sh an d across Hwy . 395. Well, m ost riders made it ac ross ... . . Lo and behold, a guardian of our traffic laws appeared on ' the scene and wa n ted t o kn ow what was going o n. IRRC flag person nel m ann ing the crossing informed him that an enduro was in progress and the course led across the highway before heading in to t he Rand Mountains. Smokey was unim p ressed an d said " Yo u can ' t ru n a race across the highway!" A radio call brought cl ub president T om Kin g to the scene . He trie d t o explain to the officer th at races crossed th e highways all th e time. Smokey insisted they coul dn 't. Kin g said in deed they could. (All this time riders were crossing.) Finally the o ffice r star te d stopping ride rs. About 15 ride rs were tu rned back befo re a Sm okey Superior k nowledgeable sho wed u p . and informed Dudley Do-ri ght th at it was indeed legal. Every th ing was now fin e ; excep t so me riders we re on th eir way back to camp ve ry upset with th e California Highway Patrol. A good p ortion o f th e sec e nd loop was c ompose d o f m an y new trai ls cu t throu gh the roll in g hill s o f the Rand Mounta ins. Sp u rloc k dropped his o nly other p oin t in th is sec tio n while all othe rs ha d trou ble c op ing wi th th e challengi ng terrain. Ossa mou nte d Steve Keu ll was clean on the first loo p bu t dropp ed five on the second whi ch dropp ed him to th ird ove ral l, first Op en. F irst B in was J o hn Lemb i, on Harry Keast 's old 250 Pe n ton, with 12 points lost at 171h ove rall. No A riders finished in the 125 class (favorite Ric k Muny on o n his ISDT C R- 125 shattered a chain) so Pen ton mounted :Vlar k Wronski, a B rider trying his second enduro, took 125 honors with a loss of 23 points, riders for about six m iles. Since the first check was just 5. 1 m iles, a numher of rider s found the mse lves late. T he second check was out of sig ht, 3. 0 mi les past the first , down a short, bu t ex tre me ly steep, d o wnh ill. A whole bunch of good rid er s were very surprised wh en the y cres te d th e to p and f ound them selves a lad early. From the re on the r idin g w as fun . The co urse crossed T rona Road in to wh at riders ca ll th e " San d Hill s," ac tually th e Summ it Ran ge. A chec k at 24 m ph , to kee p everyone honest, an d th en so me timekeeping fo r awh ile at 2 1 m ph before IWO ste ep san dy downhills, had eve ry o ne back hump in g to m aintain th e ave rage. The last ch ec k on the first loop was located smack dab at the bo ttom o f the second hill and it w as the C tiebreake r. From th e che c k 10 th e finish it was boogie lime; for C rid er s. it was the en d of the enduro, bu I fo r A and B riders it was a four minu te gas stop and th en on 10 Ihe tougher second loop. T he cou rse snaked th ro ugh a treachero u s rock canyon which was virtually trials type low gear riding, then riders had a clear shot across the desert valley to make up their late tim e before turning in to the foothills surroundin g Red Mountain. A chec k caught m ost riders late, with only the fastest main tain ing the ave rage, th en a tri cky off camber d escen t kep t th em beh ind un til they hi t Pipe Lin e Road whe re th e average t urned 10 a m odest 12 mph. T hey fou nd ou t why as the c ou rse turned up a rocky 'wash , aptly named "A shl ock's Gu lch " in honor of it s discovere r, Loop Captain Bob A shl ock. Honda 's Bob N ickelsen on h is bored and stro ked TL- 25 0 really shi ne d as he leaped over giant ro cks, p assin g riders righ I and left. More th an one c1utch went u p in sm o ke as ride rs struggled up th e tight r ocky sec tion . After what seemed fo rever th e course tu rned ou t o f th e w ash, cro ssed a rid ge, and dropped in 10 a sand wash wh ich was considerably easi er. Nat urally a check was wai ting to m ak e sure eve ry on e was ke ep ing t rack o f th eir h o urs and m inutes.. The coup was a horrible rocky uphill just short of the finish, By this time most riders were really whipped There was o nly one way up the hi ll, and th aI was to hang on, grit you r teeth , and keep the fron t end heading up. Rokon moun ted Ro n Bishop ran out of gas at the b o t to m with just half a mile to go. Ron, who was an alterna te for th is year 's Six D ay T rials Te am , bumm ed some gas from a spectator on a four-stroke Honda. Ron prayed the R o kon wo u ld n "t seize in th e short distance to go. He m ade it , bu t dropped three late poin ts at the finish, wh ich dropped h im o u I o f th e l Op len ove ra ll. So u th em California Trials Expert Bernie Schreib er team ed up with Dirt Bike 's _Len Weed 10 try an endu ro an d man aged to burn six of th e ten chec ks. T hey sa lvaged a B T eam win wi th T ho mas Burm an th oug h. First A te am was th e AAA Cycle spon so re d crew o f J oh n Townsend , Punk Wilso n an d Dave Ma lUS on their KTMs. The Mo ntesa Enduro learn of Dave ' Evans, Roy Sheridan and Fred Hayes too k second honors. Two fair ladies o f the Wom en 's Division finished with Linda Zierer (Hon) win ning th e 125 class an d Car rie Watson (Bu l) taking the 250 class. One protes t was received by the club referee. Honda mounted Mik e Adams pro tested ch eck H as being a ta d short in mil eage and put up his SiO to have it rec loc ked, After a rech ec k, the referee tu rned down the protest, as the mileage checked ou t and th e $ 10 brough t so me thirsty checkers so m e cold beer. Some rid er s thought a few of the _re too fun ~tthe~b state d they o nly put on a 6 9.4 mile endu ro -an d d idn "t h ave a lot of milea ge to pl ay with slo w easygoi ng speeds. However, tim ek eep in g pla yed an importan t part in a good score as check B and H caugh t a lot of rid ers early . More than on e rider burned it by IWO m inu tes, o r m ore.
