Moates started in seventh p lace, bu t by th e halfway mark, had moved to just be hin d Dave Hau gh, who was in th ird. Mo ates motored by Dave on the sandy horsesh oe tum, bc:low th e to wer, by holding onto the inside line at a WFO p ace. On e short lap later, in exactly the same .spot, Mo ate s cul m ina ted his dr ive for the top by b last in g through the outside berm , cu tt ing off the man th at he ha d been chasing, Edd ie Cole. Ed was st ar tled but man aged a second place finis h behind Marty. Moates won the seco nd m oto as we ll, bu t he was helped when Cole was disqu alified for cu tting th e co urse e arly in th e race. David J ones, riding for Desert Mo torcy cle Supply in River sid e. was in for second an d Todd Hooper, th ird. Ka th y Esposito gave th e boy s a goo d run for their mon ey in th e Mini Beginn er class bu t it wasn't enough to beat R ich ard Isin g. who ro de to a gran d slam.
