In the Trophy Dash, Ted Davidson bl ew th e whole field away. Coming down for th e chec kered he pulled up the front end for a long wheelie down the front ch u te ... (d on ' t think even Evel would d o one at that speed, Ted!) Start of th e Novice Main was a three way scu ffl e for the lead between Charlie Summers, Jim Mertens, and Eddie Lawson , with Lawson emerging the leader. Behind it was Summers, Mertens and Don Baile y, who had pulled all the stops au t un til he fell. He thrashed around a bit after bailin g off bu t the race wasn't stopped and he walked ba ck to th e pits. Ted Davidson was again away and gone in th e Combined Main , shooting out into th e lead, followed by Gennai, Mead, Wrigli 1. Fortune and McWhorter. Rod Sexon slowed down a bit after he hit th at infamous south turn hole, which had p lagued riders all evening long, and looked like a motocrosser up on the pe gs for a few moments. Fortune and Mead were forced in to the pits w ith mechanical ills within two laps of each o th er and McWhorter and Wright wer e havin g at it . Suddenly Davidson wa s down, com ing ou t of turn four, getting up · on the bik e and go ing "Slide McGinty slide" down the fro n t chu te. The m ob charging up b ehind all managed t o evad e him and he w as so on up and on his way again . Gennai h ad e ff o r tle ssly taken th e lead an d th en it w as Jim Wright down in th e sam e pl ace as David son.. Wright's chain had co me adrift, wrapp ing itself all arou nd the rear wheel, . brin ging an abrup t end to his ra cin g. Again the pack wa s be aring down, an d Wrigh t was ha ving tr oubles ge tting out fr om under. bu t everyone cleared him. The pit crew h ad more troubles draggin g the now locked up Yamaha across to the infield side. They had go tten th e bike and themselves clear as the pack came around th e n orth turn again. but this tim e th e red fl ag came ou t and the race _was stopp ed o n th e 12th lap , an action that was not co ns idered necessary by many people. It was a disappointin g evening, from the standpoint . of promoter J. , C. Agajanian, He had hoped riders would take advantage of the ha lf-miles before th e National to get those needed transfer poin ts bu t the Novice s obviously weren 't all up to the opportuni ty. Man y of them were missin g, including some o f th e high point boys. Again , Agajanian was u nhappy with having to ru n Juniors and Experts togeth er. T he sa nc tio n ca lled for three separate m ains w ith th e ap p ro p ria te fe es being paid a nd no n-refundable. He feels the practice of com bining rid ers is un fa ir to th e Ju niors as it often does the yellow-platers ou t of transfer points and first place m o ney. He also expressed unh app iness over the race bei ng sto pp ed when the trac k was clear. It di d in dee d seem to be an unnecessary decision on th e starter's part. • Results in Results Section, Saddleback MX By Danny Raymo nd TheLatestN:.wsAnd DevebpnentsFran fuJtaco.TheOxnpanyThat Buikls Mtorcycles.ArxI NothingEEe. ~ VESTERINEN WINS WORLD TRIALS CHAMPIONSHIP ~ GARTH BROW ..0 O. .... u TAKES SANTA FE o CROWN BULTACO CONTINUES TRIALS DOMINATION aborted ear lier this year when, after Se p t em be r 12 , 1976 SWIitz er Iand winning the f!rs t round in Ireland, h e Finnish trials ac e Yrj o Ves ter inen has become the new and firs t non-English World Ch ampion in the sport of Ob s erved Trials .
