Pat Hallim an was the last rider of the evening to p ick u p the win with a triple and he did it in the Open class. Keith Fearing had a fourth in his first race bu t ad ded two seconds and ca me up with the second by a scan t p oint over T erry Cowdin. John Hewitt started out slow in the 250cc Novi ce class. running third toJ ay East a nd Eddie D rak e in th e first moto, Motos two and three saw him jump out in front and never look back. Eddie and Jay battled for second with Eddie winning' the tie bre aker by virtue of a . second place finish in the final moto. T he 12 5cc Novice class was the hard lu ck class of the evening. Doug Shane. with two wins to his cred it. could do no better than third after a DNF in the first moto, Mark Larnkjaer scored a first and second bu t the third moto did him in. He was 'ab le to do no better than fifth and th at gave him second overall. Ro bert Pfetzin g, 3-3 ·2. ac tu ally tied Mark but that second on th e fin al moto gave him the win . • . GOLD MEDAL CMC Irwindale gears up for Night National WINNERS, JACK & TOM PENTO N, GARY YOUNK INS, CARL CRA NKE, DANE LEIM BA CH, ROD BUSH, JEFF HI L L, DON By Tom Blattler CICHOCK I, JEFF GERBER, BIL L GEIER, ERIC JENSON, IRWINDALE, CAL ., SEPT. 17 FRA NK After two rained out events, and rescheduling the CMC Night National to October I, Irwindale Raceway's Weekly Friday motocross program finally got down to business again last Friday night. • The 125 Pro class saw an other up set with Mark "Mad Man" Lawrence riding h is Cro wn Cycle Yamaha to the overall vict ory over some of the top SoCaI riders. Lawrence came fro m behind .in the last two mo tos to cop the overall with second going to J o hn Atwood FMF Hon) , third went to Bob Marino Hon) and fourth to Gary Denton, the "King of Irwindale. " In the first moto , Denton and his D-G_ teammate, David T ay lor, ran away from the rest of the fie ld with third going to Atwood, fourth to you ng Scot Clifton, and fifth to Tim Lunde. Lawrence, after a poor start, cou ld only muster a ninth place fini sh. Round two found the "Mad Man" back on his groove as he passed Denton at th e halfway point in the race and easily won. Denton then fell off his Honda, allowing Atwood to finish second, followed by Tim Lunde, Marino, and Ron Turner. In the final moto , Lawrence again charged by Denton for the lead and the overall win with Denton taking second followed by Marino, Eddie Clark, and Taylor. The 250 Pros saw the defending Night National champion, Jeff Vidic, score a clean sweep with three moto victories. Vidic 's only real competition came from Lawrence, aboard his Sweet Duck Suzuki. Lawrence finished second in the first moto, third in the second and fourth in the final moto for second overall. Third overall went to current number one Bill Rubly foll owed by Turner. aboard a T & M Suzuki, and Val Tarnietti. Turner, again riding a T & M Engineering Suzu ki, picked up overall honors in the 500 Pro class with a win and two second place finishes, Second overall went to Tamietti, the current CMC Pro point leader. who captured the final moto.
