Dan led for three laps on the short track before Allen Swett took over to go on for the victory On the half mile Dan held the lead for one lap before Lynn Wagstaff took over and led them home. John Silva who rides a fast 100cc Kawasaki, will get a chance at the Amateurs nex t week after his outstanding performances. He won the 100cc Novice ShortTrack, and out ran the 125cc boys who were in the combined race. .Brad Bates was the first 125cc Nov ice. T&M po wered Bruce McDougal used a little body langua ge for style and speed at Saddleba ck. three seconds. Each moto a new rider took the win Rod Rainey was the vietor in the first race, Scott Zastrow was the second moto winner, and Jim Lvingston took the final race. But Cannon's . three seconds took the trophy, Rainey placed second and Scott Zastrow finished third overall. Older brother Chris had a similar situation, but he won the first and third races. Darren Hulbert, a real up and coming star, broke Chris' winning streak \ the second time out. At the trophy present atio n the two mini bikers, Chris and Amateur Darren, received trophies for their fine efforts. Re sults in Results Section. FMF/Reid fly high By Patt i Trotter ORANGE, CAL, SEPT. 5 Team letters have to be the in thing for todays racing ' teams. Just look around the track and check out the jerseys. Not too many say ' <, . 30 anything, just letters. So m e week we m ay see Team Alpha-Bits, to go along with Team Banana. Team T&M's Radical Ron Turner and Bruce McDougal were first off the line in the first one-two-five moto, with FMF's Warren Reid and DG's Gary Denton nailing down - the three, four spots. As the two T&M riders were going into the tum at the scoring tower McDougal got around Turner, but Turner manage d to maneuver his bike back into the lead. Warren Reid got up to seco n d and Gary Denton third, ' relegating McDougal to fourth. Turner maintained an d really started to open it up . Denton m oved to second an d finally out-powered Turner. Denton held the lead with fantastic control in spite of a broken right shock. Between motos Reid was busy changing clutch plates and pressure springs. In the seco nd moto Denton literally flew down the start hill with Reid, McDougal and Alan Smith giving chase. On the second lap Reid took the lead away from Denton who dropped back to third. Second, Bruce McDougal started to put the squeeze on FM).ยท' s super star. Taking home the money were Reid, Denton, and McDougal. For the last few weeks, the 250 Pro riders have been fast ! As the first moto . went off Nightengale Mfg.'sJohn Smith was on the gas for the lead, b ut he experienced a bit of trouble, and was passed by Jeff Vidic (Mai), Mike Bell (Hus), and Kevin "Viva" Rodgers (Mon) . Vidic gassed it, but on the fourth lap retired from the race with mechanicals. Seems so m eo ne forgot to tighten the nut on the rear axle. With Vidic o ut, it was Bell, Ron Turner (T&M) and Smith: Sm ith got a fantastic holeshot and was far out in front for the entire race. Bell was really begin ning to push for second and in the last moments of the race, came on with unb elievab le speed to try and get under Turner for seco n d. Smith, Turner and Bell got the payback. Only 12 Open Pros sho wed up and Jeff Folan; (KTM), Jim Lowe (FMF 4-Stro ke) and Gene Martin (Mai) were the big winners. Results in Results Section. . Fairground MXfun By Haro ld Tyndall LANCASTER, CAL., SEPT. I Mot ocross the'all American sport? Well not quite, but you would have thought so at the Antelope Valley Fair with the .local queens giving the winners kisses and everybody standing .fo r the National anthem. Bruce Howell Productions put on a fantastic race with a terrific well prepared track with good organization. The racing in the 125 Pro clas s was a one man game as Terry Ducker (Yam) took almost a 20 second lead after dicing with up co m ing Pro Rick Hulsixer (Yam). The second moto was simply a carbon copy of the first, with Terry taking home his share of the $1000 purse. In 250 competition it was Craig Osborn (Bul) making it a no contest event, going one for one, taking home next week's gas money . Results in Results Section. Perkins gets it together By Elaine Jon es CORONA, CAL., SEPT. 1 Danny Perkins sorted the bugs out of his 250cc Yamaha and hit for two, winning both the Short Track and Half Mile Expert classes. On the short track the Amateurs had to run with the Experts and Rob SeIvy proved himself eq ual to anyone in the fiel d as he hitched in behind Danny an d held off Jack Smith The half mile saw .Dora t hy Rowe give Danny a run for h is m oney as she led fo r o ver half the race b efo re he finally got around her to collect the wi n. Rob Selvy kept the 250 Amateur Half Mile win in doubt until t he last lap w hen he slipped by Greg Johnson. Chris Choisser, riding for t he first time as an Amateur, was in for third. Mike De Bruyn graduated magna cum lau de to the ran ks of Amateur as he captured both the 250 Novice goes. Kirk Johnson . grand-slammed the . Mini Division I Short Track on Bobby Garabedian and David Hulbert and proceeded to turn the 125cc Amateurs everywhere but loo se as he ran away fro m Terry McCreery and Fred Conover on the short track and Terry and Tom Headley on the half mi le. David Nelson was the only other rider to hit for two as he won both the Short Track and Half Mile Mini-Division II. Brad Roach and Steve Headley were second and third on the short track and Brad Roach had a photo finish for the first in the half m ile with Paul Ferrell third. Dave Johnson had everyhting working to perfection and was gone as soon as the flag d ro pp ed in the Open Expert Half Mile. Steve Miller dropped into seco nd ahead of Walt Foster and was ab le to ho ld him off fo r t he p lace spot but Walt came back to take the Open Short Track over Dave Johnson. Jim Roach picked up another win on h is 500cc Yamaha in t he Open Amateur Short Track. Joh n Karns Jr. played bridesmaid for the evening with a second. The Open Amateur Half Mile still belongs to Dave Peters but he b et ter VALENCIA, CAL, AUG. 29 For the first time ever, the Dirt Diggers held a District 37 MX out at Indian Dunes' Shadow Glen cour se. Unfortunately because of the extremely hot weather, a small entry showed up and the intended 30 minute motos were shortened to 20 minutes. , With o ut q u estio n District 37's Women's Division is probably one of the finest, not to mention the largest and most hotly contested, of any of the clubs. Sue Fish p ut on another incredible performance, managing to lap . every rider including second place in both mo to s. Dee Cates, a J unior rider. surp rised a number of Experts when she finished second overall. Third we nt to Dee Harmon who was also seco n d in clas s. The 250 Experts put on some of the best raci ng of. the day. Weiker. Sanchez and Gonzales finished in that o rder although the battle for first was a to ugh o ne. Gonzales had a fron t row seat as he waited for either Welker o r Sanchez to .. take a spill. A really exciting race took pl ace b et w een the minis. Ed Glover co nvincingly wo n in t he Mini Ex pe rt class, b ut the Ex pert. Jun ior an d Novice classes were co mbined, mak ing fo r a really to ugh race for the sportsman. Nils son fini shed second overall b eat ing out a number of the Pro s, an d was fo llowed by another Junior . rider, Waldrup who finish ed in t h ird . What mad e this race even more interesting was that the minis usually do n ' t race for 20 minutes on a GP co ur se. Anot her handicap were a number of turns with ve ry soft and deep dirt an d these little riders did an amazing job j ust finishing _ in spite of all that was against them. Res ults in Res ults Section. Glover doubles Dunes, Fish beats' men By Laszlo V ALENCIA, CAL, SEPT. 5 Sixteen 125 Intermediates made for a 'halibu t race at the Dunes. Woman's Grand National Champ Sue Fish, was o ne of them, and with a 2-1 finish, netted the overall wi n at the CRC sanctioned race. Sue dove into the first mo ta with almost no practice time on the revamped Shadow Glen co urse. It showed just a little as she could do no better than eighth off the start.
