T hi s t im e though , sh e was fam iliar w ith the layout. Pressing her Crown Cycle Yamaha to the max , Su e flew b y four riders in the op ening lap. Cr o ssing o ver the st ar ting line after t h e san d loop, Sue found herself in the second sp ot and gaining o n the leader, Hadley. H u ff finally m ade a mistake that bumped him off his machine. Su e motored right o n by and n ever looked . back. Hadley salvaged second o veral l, while a consistent Jamie Einbund ran 3-3 for the third spot, In Pro ac t io n, Eddie Cole dominated Open class competition, sweeping both motos. David Po tts narrowly let the first half of the opening m ota , but D ~ Fed due to bike problems. Yamaha mounted Broc Glover, fresh from the Nat io n al circuit, swept both the 125 and 2 5 0cc fields, taking home well over o ne hundred dollars, Mark Garnbret ta le d a few laps in ea ch o f the 250cc motes, but co u ld n ' t k eep wi th Broc's p a ce. Mark Lawren ce p rese n t ed a se rio us challenge to Gl ov er in t he sec o n d mota of the 12 5 cc ra ce, but m ech anical problems forced ' him to re tire early a s well. John Atwood , fr om F!\I F, ran 202 to finish b eh ind Broc h ere. Leonard G arro n , J eff Warner and T ony Walker all had a sh ot at fir st overall, go ing into their f inal m ota in t he 25 0 Beg in n er class. Tony and J e ff w ere t ied w ith fou r po in ts apiece w it h Leonard o ne b eh ind a t five. Coming out of the ga te, Wal ker was in the lead w it h Warner and Garron behin d him. A ft er o ne lap, Leonard slid out in so me m ud on one o f the sl imy turns, t his left him out of ac t ive co m peti t io n a n d als o put a big gap b etween the two leader s and th e, rest of the p a ck. J eff" s Maico really began finding som e quick lines about then, finally passing Tony abou t a lap later at the halfway point of the race, to clinch the o verall win Walker still placed second overall while G arron scored 4-1 -5 to pl ace third overall. • Perris TT & ST By Dol PERRIS, CAL, A UG. 2 8 Warm weath er and perfect track condi tion s greeted a full house of riders and specta to rs at Perris - Raceway to begin the short tr ack program. • In the 100-125, co m b in ed cla ssjKirk Johnson won all motos w ith Mike Sharp taking second. The 250 Novice class was close until the end with Suzuki mounted Dana Pet ers scoring on top followed by Chris Choisser, John Sperry led the way around the sh ort track in the 250 A m at eu r/ Ex p er t , all three , motos, Tom Clark, not giving up, took second o verall a fter a close second in the third mota. Flip Binkley a nd J eff North had their own match race in the Open Novice class to determine the overall win. They had each scored a first, second, and third, tieing them for first but with Jeff North losing time on the line, and a tremendous ride for Flip. Flip won the two lap run-off. To begin the TT program in the 100 combined, Kirk Johnson took his' usual win and went on to ride the Open Novice class tonight for the first time: Charles . Carro 11 swept the 125 combined, coming from the second line, starting further back each mota. Kirk Johnson scored second and Suzuki mounted Mark Corker third. With 'a repeat win from the short track program, Dana Peters took the win in the sec o n d 250 Novice followed b y Bill Dobbs. The firs t 250 Nov ice w as w on b y Cal Wangard w ith Bob Call oway no t far b eh ind. D icing it out fo r the win in the 500 No vice wer e Kenny R y an, an d Pat McCann fo r second, both on Yamah as, fo llo wed b y Bill Cerver a for third. Jeff North and Fli p Bin k ley had a no t her go a t it in the O p e n Novice, sh aring t he b rass, a n d this ti me t h e w in went to J eff North. Wal t Foster, ke eping in shape, won the Open Ama t eur/ Expen, but Mike Montgomery and J ohn Sp erry made him work fo r h is win. In the third mota, on the second lap, Mike za p ped b oth J ohn and Wal t o n the d ownhill, then Walt too k back the lead t o the finish. Meanwhile ba ck in the 250cc Beginner Can-Am rider Greg c la ss another Ern est, parlayed his 1-2-1 moto finish es to take the first from Dal e Whitman and G eorge Bail ey. It w a s close in the 250cc Nov ice cl as s but Tom Burmeister got the nod by o n e scant point ov er Nick Peltzer. D ave Sanchez tied fo r th ir d, bu t b y his h igh er place finish in the final m oto beat Cal Wangurd out. Open Nov ice and Intermediate Gerry St einer and Pat Halliman each cl aimed three f ir st p la ce finish es and the win in their respective classes. 12 5 Beginner w in ner Randy Shoaff didn't lo ok like h e wo u ld stay lo n g in the tyro ranks as h e won all thre e mo tos with co m p arative ease. Fran k Manfredi gave good pursu it but it w asn' t en o ug h Carey Steiner had to fight for his third as both Kevin Okura and Brent Rouhe went lo o k ing . ' for h is h ead. St ev e Morefield left all the shuckin' and jivin ' t o Robert Pfetzing a nd Dave Terrell in the 125 Novice go . Raben and Dave were t ied going into the final mota but Robert got the jump off the line and brought it home for the second. Darrell Rithey got o ff to a slow start in the 125cc Intermediate, but followed it up with two first places to 'take the w in , b y one point fr om Robert Kitchell. Mike Burnett was third. . Marc Madore topped Harley Hall to win the Mini Beginner, whileJoe Morris socked it ' to the Mini No vices with second pl a ce Dirk Sweet the only o ne able to get ev en close.
