Lacey beat out Geffert at the tum but Geffert p assed a t a tight .t um an d took over the lead. From . the n on Geffer t was on his own. Back fu rt her Lacey was battling fo r second with Rory Run dle (KTM), wh o had worked up from a so-so start. At the finish, however, it was Lac ey wh o had th e advan tage. Bruce Manzoni ca ugh t the res t of th e 250 Pros napping at · the start of the first mota and shot away on his CZ. Pressuring Manzoni was Kipp Classen ( KT~1 ) . Classen hassled briefly with Manzoni and then moved into the lead. Also working up were Phil Crane and Bob Myers, passing riders in giant swoo p s and movin g Into second and third place behind Classen. . Back in the 500 Pro race it looked to be a Larry Lacey and a Bob Geffert showdown, and it was . Lacey beat out Geffert at the start and he beat him to the flag to pick up his first Pro win at Fre mont. Phi'l Crane p ut his Suzuki into th e lead of mo ta two of the 250 Pro with Kipp Clas sen right behind. Bob Myers was up in third this mota and pushin g Classen hard. Bill Johnso n was also up in fourth. Cran e built up a sho rt lead, as the mo ta wore o n, the rest of t he ride rs be hind him had pushed their way up to challenge. Phil kept up the pace to win th e mota wi th Myers p us h ing. Classen and Jo hnso n push ed Myers in t um . It was tigh t alrigh t; all fo ur rid ers within a few feet o f ea ch o ther at the flag. Talk was spread ing through. the p its about the upco ming Northern Nigh t N ational Motocross Championship to be held September 2 and 4 here. There will be con t ingencies for the Juniors on Thursday and a 1500 purse up for • gr abs for the Pros. Results in Results Se ction. Bailey o n the 360cc Boss fr am ed Yamaha in t heir resp ecti ve Expert Main For Bailey, it was a eve n ts. come -fro m -behind effort with te am m ate Rodger Slack doing t he leading o n all but the last lap. The t wo alo ng wi th Rick Delacy were far and above the rest of the p ack wit h Rod Spencer getting by Scott Pearson on the borrowed Hank Sanchez twin. Rainey once again too k another easy 25 0cc Expert win over Dave Faria and Brian Thompson. Thompson handled Bailey, Slack and Mike Delacy for his third. . Some other So uthern Californians came north to lay waste with Todd Brown beating out Larry Kruse mann in the 125 Novice and Pete Hames taking out D-35 top notcher Bob Ely. Dave Rosa pulled au t all the stops for the 100 Mini Expert win with Tony Deatherage in for second over big Jim Cunningham. Of course, that didn't stop the moans an d groans.
