Going into th e last moto the Novi ces had a ' four way tie for the win , which hard riding Dain ty Don managed to scoop up. Rickety Rick cam e in se cond, ahead of Toilet Tom who settled, for third. Mike Pillar highlights CRC/NMA By Laszlo VALENCIA, CAL., A UG . 11 On ce again th e 125 Exp ert class was one of the mos t visibly co mpetitive classes. Mike Pillar, one of the m ajor factors, held off 20 Bobby Jones for the entire fir st mo to, much to the delight of the cro wd. Bobby tried to make a move late in th e ra ce but was turned back by t he domineering Pillar . Evan Marcus was in front of th e pack throughout the second mo to , Pilar held second from the onset of the race, but had to pay attention to th e action taking place just behind ' him. Willy Simons final ly got his act together and was engaged in an all out battle with J ones for third. Willy had the ad vantage and was going afte r Pillar when he go t a little too excited and slid out at the rear of the track. J ones had no place to go but right over him and ended up with a DN F. Sim ons w as back in- th e race o ne lap late r. Pillar took th e 'overall win, Marcus finished second wit h Mike Mossman third overall. Mar k Casper was he ad ed for a first place trophy in the 12 5 Novice s until his fro n t brake hel p ed toss him on his can early in the second moto. Scott Morgan, who ran seco nd to Mark in th e first moto, went on to win the second race ' and th e trophy. Kevin Bollinge r edg ed o u t Duffy Phelp s for second. Bo th riders had be en tied a fte r two motos, but Kevin's better sec o nd rid e gave him the runner-up spot. It took two first place finishes t o do it , and wh en th e checkered fell, it wa s T o m Malone who grand-slammed th e 250 No vice class . Behind h im , Gary Jackson and Gary Garcin were involved in an in tense battle for second. Garcin was in trouble off the start, going down early in the race, while Jackson held th e lead. Malone soon passed J ackson , but Garcin wasn 't able to move up cl ose enough un til late in th e race .. . and by th en it was too late. Jackson ju mp ed ahead of Garcin early in the second rno to too. ' After a lap and a hal f however, Garcin found h im self in second. They finished in that o rd er and despite being tied in points with five apiece, their second moto finish broke th e tie, giving Garcin second o verall and Jackson third. , Results in Results Section . For Brian, it was lik e 'r iding with an old fri end; bu t for Jeff, it wa s a m atter of survival. ' On Saturday , with Ward and Myers co ugh in separate d qu alifiers, the winning was easy for them, leavin g th e Sunday finals in the Stock and Mo dified classes to be held as on e long sh owdown. Pulling a 30 second-plus lead, Brian Myerscough made hi s win a Sunday jo yride, much like th e Euro p eans wh o hav e humiliated the Am ericans on the sam e track. Waaay bac k in sec on d , J eff Ward's megabuck Honda wasn 't putting o ut the same ponies as were the hordes o f Yammies aro u nd him . For his efforts, J eff go t only a fourth while Jim Holl ey and Derren Penrod go t second and third resp ectively. Old-Timers gather -at Perris By Sherry Fraze PERRIS, CAL., AUG: 14 If you , wan ted to kn ow wh at' racin g ' was abo ut in th e 60 's, you should have dropped in on Perris ' Raceway Saturday. It was the fifth ann ual gat hering of Old-Tim~rs. There wer e Hilltoppers and Red Dots, Riverside Bombers and Foothill Hawks, Sidehack ers and Dyna Mites, Checkers ' and Hi Boots, Barstow M.C. and O.C.M.C., mounds of California Gophers an d J ackrabbits too. The first 250 class was won by Jim Cooke (Hon) . Suzuki mounted Allen Lowen grabbed a second, followed by Billy Andre (Ho n) . More hot' action-in the 250/350 co m bin ed class was won by Jim Doron on a Suzuki and also starred the notable Ed' Kretz , Jr., on a Honda, for second. The gold in th e first 500 class was p icked up by Bul taco mounted Jim Hayes, but "gold en age " Tom \\-'hitlock (Ho n) wasn 't far behind for second. The second 500 class was topped by Morris Wright (Mai). Excitem en t was mounting in th e third 500 class with Yamaha mounted Dick Moore riding to the win with hi s old sm oothness and st yle, feet up on the pegs, all the way to the finish. The first 650 event was taken by Chuck Woods (Yam ). Richard Johnson was in for second on a Triumph, and Go rdon Myers (BS A) was followed by Si Po rter (Tri) . The win ner of the last 650 event was Norton mounted Mike Posey. C. H. Wheat (Hon ) and To ny Denius (T ri) were ' dicing it o u t for second.
