All of a sudden Artie Nay and Jim Wright jumped into the lead but it was short lived as John took over on lap three and Jim 's bike started going sour. Jeff Allison made sure it stayed in the family with a second and Artie Nay got his Kawasaki in for third. D ave Pe ters is enjoying h is Amateur status and hit for wins in both the IT and half mile. On the IT Dave had to , co m e from last to ge t by Cliff Mathews and Fred Conover. On the half-mile he took no chances an d led it fr om 's ta rt t o finish . Fred Conover was second and Vic Hensley th ird. • Irwindale Raceway By Tom Blattler Photos ~y Buzz Baty IRWINDALE, CAL.• JULY 3 0 Mark "M ad Man" Lawrence riding in the 125 and 250 Pro classes, took the 125 victory and placed r second to Jeff Vidic in the 250s, but Larence had the spectators on th eir feet during tw o of the most exciting motos ever seen at Irwindale. In the fir st 125 mota one of the finest fields of the year was at the gate, including Gary Denton, the favorite. Denton took a five-bike length lead in the first co m e r and looked to be heading for an eas y victory. However. Denton pulled his Honda off the track on the back straigh taway with fuel problems. That left Mark Ty er • in the lead followed by Eddie Clark,' Dave Eropkin, and Lawrence. Mark go t off to a poor s ta rt, but was steadily moving th ough the field and by lap three had moved past Clark for second. It looked as though Mark would have to settle for second with Tyer holding - down a gian t lead. ' However, Lawrence be gan to close on Tyer and by the final lap was only five bike lengths behind and still closing. At the final two turns, Lawrence was right on Tyer's rear wheel, and in the final turn slipped underneath Tyer with a fantastic move and beat him to the finish line by a · wheel The crowd we nt absolutely crazy. ':l In the second five-lap round. Denton again took the lead with Lawrence. alon g with Tyer, right behind. The three . pulled aw ay from th e pack and Denton • looked to h ave the victory within his grasp. But, on ce again, Lawrence made a comeback. On the final lap "Mad Man" moved under Den ton in the far corner and Lawrence took his second straight win followed by Denton, T yer and Eropkin. In the final round, Denton again ~bbed the lead and flat ran away from Lawrence for the easy win. Lawrence, knowing that he only needed to finish in the top three, coasted to second. Overall, Lawrence was the winner followed by Tyer , Pessy, Eropkin and Denton. In the 250 's. Jeff Vidi c • coming off a fine vic tory at the SuperbowI, captured the final two motos for the overall honors. At Louden , Dunlop Tires were on the winners of the 750cc and 250cc expert events. At Laguna Seca , Dunlop-equipped cycles finished first, second and third in both the 750cc pro series expert 200 krrre vent, and the 250cc expert lig h~wei g h t 64km event.
