that they were going to have to run in the sixes to even have a chance. For a while it looked like Gary Chandler on a 500 Yamaha was going to hold it with his 6:70 seconds. But Walter Humphries on an 800 Triumph finally found a good line and set a 6:65 second in the 1500 class and just to insure his place he beat his own time in the Exhibition class with 6: 63 seconds. On his second try in the 500 class Gary Chandler did it again with a 6:39 time but he did not stay on top long. In fact he beat himself with a 6 : 12 second time on his 900 Honda four. No one could believe that he would be beat, but Mike Jones and his 1000 Triumph triple had other plans. On his second try in the 1500 class he pulled a super holeshot and went right up_ the middle, over the ledges and all. When the clock was read he ' had set a new record on the 250 foot hill. His 5:99 secon ds over seems almost unbelievable. All the riders in the Exhibition class trie d t o ma tch Mike's feat b ut the " closest anyone came was To m Hairston also on a Big D Cy cle 1000. Tom even tried his chains but on ly came up with a 6:3 6 second ride. After a poor start this year Mike is really coming on in the race for 1976 King of the Hill. He has three top times and Gary Chandler had four. This is the closest this part of the Texas Hillclimb Championship series has been in severf ' years at the halfway poin t. Mike Jones sets new record at Whitney Hillclimb By Diane Polley WHITNEY ..TEX. ,JULY 11 Beneath threatening skies the Texas Hillclimbers Association and 106 brave entrants held an exciting and ~u sp ens e filled hillclimb at Lake Whitney Cycle Ranch. After two weekends of slow soaking rains the h ill had super traction but all the rock ledges in the hill had , been uncovered so it was not without some challenges. In the 125 class the riders who we re racking up the points at the start of the season have suddenly dropped back. An influx of new Hondas and Suzukis h ave really changed their class. Tracy Davidson went home with first captured with a ti me of 7:97 seconds on a Yamaha Mono. He was closely follo wed by James Blanton on a 125 Kawasaki who topped the hill in 7: 99 seconds. These tw o y oung men really had their bikes scooting along. In the race fo r top time it was evident even before the big boys started running The 125 Amateur class looked like a 'T roy Broussar d benefit as he gassed his J&B prep ared Honda into huge leads to win both motos arid his large first place trophy. Despite serious attempts by the other riders to catch Broussard the pack finished far behind both motos in the identical finishing order with Shannon Ratliff (Hon) topp ing Nicky Ryland (Ho n) and Randy Blackwell (Suz) . Mike Morgan h as the reputation of either winning or crashing an d did both to day in the 250 Amateur class . Morgan banzaied into the tITSt tum to grab tITSt trailed by Guy Romine (Bul) and Tray Blanchard (Mai) . Morgan held his favorite position until mid-moto when he highsided in a tum allowing Romine to get by for the mota win: Second mota, Ray Tillery (Han) put his 1973 holeshot Special into the lead with Morgan, Blanchard, and Romine waiting for any mistake. On the second lap, TIllery crashed letting Morgan break free into the lead for the remainder of the race. Morgan (2-1) took top honors with Romine (1-3) edging Blanchard (3-2) for third leaving fourth to TIllery. After a year's layoff from racing, . Kelly Donaldson is slowly working his way back to peak form and today added the combined Expert class to his list of credits. Kelly put his reworked 250 Honda out front in the first moto as Oliver Rutledge (Hus), Terry Guidry (Suz) and C. Patin (Kaw) battled for position. Donaldson begin pulling away from the pack until Rutledge put on a charge that carried him close to the leader, only to fade at m o ta 's end with Donaldson out front, trailed by Rutledge, Guidry, and Patin. Donaldson pulled a carbon copy start in the second mota, to eventually motor awa y for the mota and overall victory, trailed by Guidry and Ru tledge.
