A Pennzoll Product C'e• • lond, Ohi o ....104 Pennzoll Co. 1976 Capitol City' Night Motocross was offering a $1500 purse for the Experts and contingencies for the Amateurs in th e hopes that they would come and put on a first class show for the large Friday night crowd here in Austin. Well, put on a show they did in what turned out to be some of the most thrilling motocross ever seen at night. The 125 Expert race had them on their feet as local Pro Bobby Bullock guided his Yamaha through the first tum and into the lead , a lead which he would hold for over half the first moto, Just when it seemed that Bullock might have the race under con trol, he crashed, letting Dicky Turnbo and several other riders get by. In trying to catch back up Bullock crashed several more times and finished out of the money for the evening. With about two laps to go in the first m oto, David Daniels from New Braunfels slipped inside of Turnbo to take the win. Austinite Ricky Blackwell won the second moto, followed closely by David .Daniels and Mel Newman from San Angelo. Overall for the night it was Daniels, Blackwell, Newman, and Turnbo. Roger Brown won both motos of the 250 Expert class but got some stiff competition from Mark Wheeless in the first m o to, Wheeless, from Austin and riding a brand new Penton, flashed his way to the lead and held it almost all the way to the finish, but with just a few laps to go he made a slight error in a comer and Roger Brown zapped hiin instant! . The second moto was all Roger's, with Dicky Turnbo keeping a respectable distance in second. For the overall it was Brown, Turnbo, Wheeless and Ti m Riddle. • Riding his factory Suzuki with the big n umber 2 indicating his prowess on the national circuit, Steve Stackable thrilled his hometown fans by putting the RM 370 Suzuki into the lead on lap one o f the first moto and proceeding to pull away from the rest of the pack. At about the midway point of the race Stack pulled off the track with mechanical problems, giving the first moto victory to Ricky Blackwell on a Husky. Chris Dublin was , second- and Dicky Nowell third. Stack was on the line again for the start of the second moto and everyone expected him to take up where he left off in the first moto. Everyone, that is, except Roger Brown. As the rubber band mapped signifying the start of moto two, Roger Brown rocketed his Yamaha out of the first turn first and took .o ff like his seat was on fire. Meanwhile, Steve had gotten a poor start and was working his way through the pack on a track that was not especially designed for passing. By the time Stack broke free of the pack, Roger had put about 400 yards between them and was flying. Steve was fmding it very difficult to close the gap on Brown and though he closed to within 50 feet or so of Roger, he had to settle for second p lace at the checkered flag. Keith Duffy was a distant third. Roger Brown went home with the 'overall cash in the Open Expert class, with Dicky Nowell second, Ric ky Blackwell third, and Tim Riddle fou rth. Contingencies were being given away to the Amateurs by T.C. Racing Enterprises, who donated gift certificates for machine work to the winners of each class, and by Steve Stackable, who donated a pair of Stackable pants (leathers) to the winner of the largest Novice class.
