The track was in sup erb condition a t the beginning of th e day and practice was reorganized to give the riders more time. Ron Self (M·V) got the holeshot in the first big-bore Expert moto, but Pat Richter (KTM) soon moved into the lead . Darrell Shultz (Bul) rode to a strong second while Self dropped way back, apparently suffering bike trouble. In the second moto it was again Pat Rich ter running away while Charlie Halcomb, who had finished fourth in the first moto , rode his new, factory sp onso red Husky to a second. Shultz followed Halcomb around for the last three laps to finish third. Ron Powers rode his trick 250 Suzuki to a clean sweep in the Division One Novice event while J eny Heiberger (Suz) had to fight off Dave Czech (Suz) in both m ot os to finis h second overall. Rick Lytle (Suz) led the entire first moto of the 250 Novice Division Two clash but with on ly two lap s to go, Ted Westover (Bu l) shot by to win . Ted had Fworked his way up from fifth place. When he came out for the second moto , he jumped right to the front. Dick t Goldsmith (Yam) , who had finished L. th ird in the first moto , wasn't going to ",le t Westover get away and pressured him ...heavily throughout the moto. Lytle got r a very bad start and was able to work his way up to fourth by the end of the moto. Tom Denton (Yam ) and Rich Voss (Bul) shared moto wins in the 250 Amateur race wi th Denton taking the overall. Vosshad to work hard to get his third and first place finishes, suffering from bad starts in both motos and fighting his way through the pack. ' It was Pat Richter (KTM) again in the 250 Expert class, moto one, with Danny Chan dler (KTM ) second. In the second moto' it was Chandler with the holeshot and Richter right behind him, but Richter bobbled a turn and was passed by Brian Jodry (Suz) . It took Richter only one lap to get Jodry back but the mistake had allowed Chandler to build up a good healthy lead. Meanwhile Darrell Schultz was moving up to challenge J odry for third. ' J odry was able to maintain until the closing laps , when Schult z (Bul) got by. Richter closed some on Chandler b ut never got within striking distance. Mike Shalow (Yam) too k the first moto of the 125 Amateurs without too ' much trouble but in the second moto he started way ba ck and had to fight to end up third. 1t was well worth the fight, as he took a first overall. The 125 Expert second moto was probably the best race of the day__ Jim Lesniewski (Hus) took the first moto with Jeff Watts easing to second on his Husky. In the second moto , it was Mike Preston (Suz) who got the holeshot with Mike Marquez (Hus) right behind. Preston began to build a slight margin over Marquez while Watts started to move up from third," Watts got by Marquez and started 'a fter Preston, catching up to him on the fifth lap . Watts tried to pass goin g into a turn but grabbed a little too much throttle and dropped his bike. Lesniewski began to pour on the coa l and was soon righ t on Marquez 's tail with on ly a lap to go . Preston looked ba ck going around the last turn, saw Marquez holding Lesniewski off and thought he had the overall win sewed up. It wasn't to be, as ' o n the last turn Lesniewski outmaneuvered Marquez and got past to take second in the moto and first overall. , Preston 's 3-1 was good for a second overall. There were 348 riders incl uding 55 Experts and Pat Rich ter strengthened his lead in the race for the S1200. As of now the series standings are as fo llows: 1. Pat Richter, 2. J im Lesn iewski, 3. Dan Chandler, 4. Jeff Watts , 5. Dennis Brand, 6. Mike Marquez, 7. Darrell Shultz, 8. Charlie Halcomb, 9. Mike Presto n , 10 . Kelly Hardman , 11. Ron Self, 12. Ken Guilbert.
