CH Day at .CMC Carlsbad By Mike Yada CARLSBAD, CALIF.,J ULY 11 For quite some tim e now, Honda has had its share of th e winnings at CMC - in combinations such as FMF & Honda, DG & Honda, or IAbove) Bobby Jones lifts off to a CMC 125 Pro win. (Below) J eff Je nning picks an inopportune moment fo r ca listhenics'at A M':' Franks and Honda. C.H. Industries traveled all the way down to Carlsbad to jump into the red fruitbowl, and making a big splash at that, adding a tinge of yellow ( and it's not a lemon, either) with some mighty RMA's of their own. Former mini crusader Bobby Jones took home the top cherry without even winning a moto in today 's CMC 125 Pro action. And to break up the Suzuki eye-strain in the 250 ranks was a lone Can -Am with Steve Rh yan handling the reins. "It looks like a gorilla took a big bite o ut of th e seat l" Ted Weeks ' d ay ended about twenty seconds in to the first 125 Pro moto, as his en gine burped up an untimely seizure, takin g out FMF teammates Alan Smith, Dave Carlson an d J ohn McGonigal along the ' wa y . Meanwhile, Mike Bell stayed clear o f th e muddy entanglem en t and bl asted away with th e first moto win a board his Franks rock etship, Bobby J ones (Suz) occu p ied th e runner-up slo t, wi th Terry Shenkell (Yam) , Randy Hess (Ho n) and Tony Wanket (FMF) engaging in .soI!le tigh t maneuvers aro un d the shghtly shortened track . T ony Wanket emerged t he victor fo r th ird spot, while brother Peter Wanket (FM F) worked h is way into fourth. PK rider Dave Eropkin opened up the final moto wi th one of his explosive holeshots, but Dave Carlson and Mike Bell overtook Eropkin on th e first lap, both in ho t pursuit o f the moto win. Bell ran the fine line between himself and Carlson for a few laps, and finally outpowered the FMF speedster up the bumpy uphill. Seconds later, Bell's bike momentarily seized, but loosened up , Bell then locked it up for the day. Bobby Jones moved into second kee ping a respectable distance from CH teammate Bill Joyce (Suz). - Wes Sutton (Mai) sparked the early 250 Pro go, which soon fizzled when Mike McG owen (Hus) slip ped into the lead. McGowen appeared unusually unstable on ' the track, swapping gro oves each to ur. McGowen began to fade as Mike Tripes (DG/Yam) charged up fr om a medicore start, p ulling away fro m Steve Rhyan (C-A). Rhyan craftily made his way around Mike Steams (Hus) and Jim Martin (CZ) . to take second. Mike Tripes got off to a poor start in the final , running nearl~ dead last off the line. Dale Anderson [Suz] pulled the head of the pack, checking up on Randy Bums' (Yam ) moves. Bums didn't wait long to pass Anderson, leaving him to bold off DG's Clark Jones (Su z). Mike Stearns worked past Jones, but later disappeared, obviously due to mech trouble. Wes Sutton took a short tumble, allowing Steve Rhyan to take up third spot, with second on the way. Rhyan made it look too easy in getting around Anderson, even easier in catching Bums, but declined to pass him. Meanwhile, Mike Tripes was attenpting to make a bid on a surprise birthday wish, as he now caugh t up to third, bu t coul d not reach Rhyan. and Suzuki duo dynamite at AMC $1000 By Joel Jamieson ORANG E, CALIF.,JULY II Betty Lasker and her Al\lC ow
