Donaldson fi ni shed runner -up both times to h old sec o nd while close behind Randy Choate (Yam) 4·3 edged Oliver Rutledge (Hus) 3·4 for third. With only fi ve riders o n th '; line for the Open Exper t class, few spectators do ubted that Keith Duffy (Su z) would emerge winner. Taking it easy, Duffy blas ted through the first tum and wheelied away unchallenged for an easy victory. Kelly Donaldson returned to the starting line to match his 250 , against the Open class machinery and en ded up second overall with a 2-3 placing. Oliver Rutledge (Hus) also returned to action for third place cash ahead of Terry Guidry (Suz). • Results in Results Section. Abilene Speed Bowl Short Track By Frank H. Harrison ABILENE, T EX. , JUN E 26 The third in a series o f Pro/Am Short Track races under the ab le direction of ex-Expert Pro fessional Freddie Beal came off smo othly at Abilene Speed Bowl tonight. With a group of over 60 rid ers and a perfect facility, the spectators were tr eated to a IITst class show. With all qualifying h eats out of the way along with a threatening summer shower in the distance to co o l things down a bit, the track go t hot again with the Trophy Open Main. Willard Kelley (Yam ) was quickest followed by Andy West o f Abilene Custom Cycles. There was an elbow to elbow ch ange when West took over th e lead while Chri s Englert moved in to second and the fin ish was West, Englett and Kelley. The 250 Main saw Mike Kidd's younger brother Gary do what Mike is good at as he put his Track N' Trail Bul out in fr on t on the first lap while a battle developed between Brownwood Yamaha's Terry McDonald and Abilene's Randy Humphreys for second. With everyone Watching the second place duel, three bikes went down in the back ranks and a re -start was necessary. This time Kidd must h ave been wishing he was with Brother Mike a t Columbus as he restarted slow and back in the pack. His work was cut out for him as Humphreys got a good lea d followed by McDonald. Kidd finally moved into third, but almost lost it again as he missed a gear with ' R. J. Ware of Reeves Cycle Shop on his heels, but Kidd charged on and finally passing McDonald and was closing th e gap on Humphreys at the flag. The 360 Main saw Andy West out in front again as Willard Kelley was nipping at his shocks while two Reeves Cycle riders Jerry Funderberg and James Huddleston, both on Buls, elbowed for th ird. In the back Ed Begley on his Dahlgren Yamaha and Gary Kidd were coming on strong, but tITSt Begley went out and Kidd fell , leaving West, Kelley and Funderberg a clean finish. In an effort to educate motocross ri ders into short track a special class was run for full knobby motocrossers; and _rough and tumble it was, as Max's Kawasaki m o u n ted Harold Boyce took the lead followed by Abilene Custom's Carl Cox.
