Newcastle Enduro By Team T urtle ~EWCASTLE, WYO. , J UNE 2 7 The eight annual Newcastle Enduro was won by Yamaha ISDT Team member, J ohn Fero with a score of th ree po ints lost. J ohn, wh o said: u l screwed-up ," wa s riding a slightly tricked-out 400 Yamaha. Second overall and winner of the 125 class was Ste p he n Mat t iesen wi th a score of four. Near ly 20 0 ri de rs from the surro un ding state s and as far away as the Province of Ontario entered and star ted off at t wo on t he minu te at 9 :01 in the morning. The co ur se, set east of Newcastle in the Black Hill s Nat io na l Fo rest, was 85 miles of trails, fire ro ad s and short stretches o f graveled roads . There were seve n checks an d sp eed averages of 18, 21 , an d 24 m iles p er hour. The main featur e of the co urse was d own ed ti mber. It wa s a go o d run, then again with seven years ex p erience, th e New castle Motorcycle Clu b kn ow s what t hey're doi ng. They we re h elp ed by fin e weathe r and moist dust fre e ground (eigh t inch es of sno w fell a we ek earlier) . Not o ne disc o uraging word was heard, not even a protest. Scores were tallied and posted and t he troph ies to five p laces in each of th e fo ur classes This was the first Champ ionship Endur o of the season, and the SRAC memb ers, a sm all p ercen tage of those en tered, received poin ts towards the 1976 Championship. Brian 11<:r, last y ear 's SRAC Enduro Champion, was the firs t SRA C memb er » in the 17 5 class. Gary Palmgren , an I SRAC m em b er fro m Co lorado Spring s, won th e 250 class wi th a sco re of 12. . j o hn Worc est<:r , an S RA C member from Steamboat Springs wo n the Open classj wi th a score of six. The first SRAC mem b er in the 125 class was Terry Grisham from Berthoud.
