Dist rict 36 & AMA sanctioned IT State Championship Qualifier West German 250GPMX By David and Margery Maltais GAILDORF , WEST GERMANY JUNE 27 KTM fa ctory rider Vladimir Kavinov p assed teammate Guennady Moisseev in the World Championship st andings at the tenth round of this year 's series by convincingly winning both races at the West German Grand Prix near Stuttgart. Moisseev scored no points lor the day in his end of the season surge to catch Heikki Mikkola who is still leading with one hundred and fifty-one points as he scored twelve points in the second race with a second place behind Kavinov. The pressure was heavy on the shoulders of factory riders Heikki Mikkola of Husqvarna and KTM's Guennady Moisseev for th is race was the tenth of the twelve ro und series and the last 'o n e before a month long break until the two final rounds of the 1976 250cc World Champ ionship are hdd in Lichten voorde, Holland and Ulricehamn, Sweden. The week before in England Moisseev had racked -up thirty big points for two wins while Heikki scored zero for the day' with a crash in the fir st and front brake failure in th e second. Moisseev's double win jumped the Ru ssian into second place, only ten points behind Heikki. Torleif Hansen and Heikki Mikkola ·tied for fastest qualify ing on Sunday morning with tim es of 2 .33.5 on the high speed two thousand one hundred meter course. Baborovsky was a close third with 2.33.9 and the rest of the top ten were Pomeroy, Daniel Pean (Mai ), Ka vinov , Jobe (ass), Falta, Andre Malherbe (KTM) and Geboers (Mai). Moisseev and Everts were down in sixteenth and seventeenth places. In the first race it was Baborovsky, Kavinov and Geboers who jumped into the lead when the gate dropped: Mikkola was in fifth place bu i dropped his Husqvarna in the second corner before the steep uphill and restarted last. Heikki pulled in after two laps realizing that he wouldn't finis h among the leaders and to save his energy for the second race. Geboers took over the lead on the first lap and led the race for ten laps before he was overtaken by Kavinov. On the next lap Sylvain was forced to retire when his Maico's crankshaft broke. M 0 isseev was holding down third place and a finish in that position for ten points would have tied he and Mikkola for .the lead. ' in the standings with one hundred thirty-nine points. But on lap fourteen Heikki was able to relax as Moisseev was forced to retire when his factory KTM suffered gearbox problems and the 1974 250cc World Champion lost the use of second and th~d gears. Kavinov and Baborovsky continued to lead the race unchallenged and Kavinov stretched his lead from four seconds on lap thirteen to twenty-one seconds at the finish. Belgian riders swept the next three places as former European 125cc Champion Andre Malherbe brought his KTM to finish third and reigning World Champion Harry Everts came in fourth . M,onte.!a -mQl1Ilted Raymond Boven got out of his bad luck plague for a strong fifth place ahead of West German 'Rolf Diefenbach on a Kramer-Maico . Injuries sustained in previous GPs hampered th e results of three of the top 250cc stars as Sweden's Torleif Hansen , who .suffer ed a broken righ t shoulder bone in Russia, pulled out wh en he found himself not going fast enough and m aking m ist akes through lack of confidence. Hans Maisch retired early when , his still we akened righ t hand co~l d not grip th e th~o~ tle, from a Spanish doctor that h e should not ride for three weeks to let the torn ligaments in his left shoulder heal after a hard cr ash in England the Sunday be for e . He had tried to overtak e Moi sseev co m ing off a jump and th e front o f hi s Bultaco did a noisedive throwing Jim directly on h is sh ould er. After qualifying fourth fastest he went out in the first race , his shift lever bent and he had to pull in to get it straigh tened by me chanic Arnie Beamon. He went back out in last pl ace, did a few laps, and decided it was better to retire and save it for the seco nd race . In the second race Kavinov agai n blasted into the lead, and th is time he w as followed all the way by Mikkola to the flag with Heikki thirteen seconds down and suffering from an injured righ t ankle that he had twisted in his -first mota crash. Pomeroy was driving hard despite his severely banged-up shoulder to pass Sigi Lerner on the second lap as he gunned it past the KTM pilot from Austria for third place. Moisseev started out in fifth place and passed Lerner on the second lap and started moving in on Pomeroy . He chopped a co up le seconds off each lap until they were racing pretty tight, but on the beginning of the eighth lap they collided. Coming out of the turn, h ard on the gas, but in different lines they crisscr ossed and Pomeroy chopped off the Russian pilot and the Buitaco's rear wheel banged Moi sseev's front end an d knocked him off the bike. It was an accident, but it left Moisseev with bent handlebars th a t he couldn't con ti nue racing with. He tried but crashed again. It was hard to quit, knowing th at Mikkola was still out th ere and would stretch his lead further abead w ith twelve points . The duel between Mikkola and Moisseev never emerged as Kavinov's double victory moved him into second place in the 250cc class behind Husqvama's Flying Finn . It has now become a close down-to-the-last-race Championship as Moisseev and Kavinov's strong finishes have dissolved the pre ·season predictions that Mikkola would sweep this year's 250cc World Championship and thus become the first man to win World Championshp titles in two classes. It is now a matter for the mathernaticans to figure out who can do it and how they 'must finish to win the World title. Heikki has six wins, two seconds, two thirds and one sixth for eleven finishes. Moisseev also has eleven finishes with five wins, two seconds, one third, two fourths and one seventh . Kavinov has sixteen finishes and more gross points than Moisseev but his points have come from three wins, one second, three thirds, two fourths and one fifth . The rest of the point finishing places are too low to be considered in the title chase for top position. With only four more races to go, Heikki knows that Moisseev must have as many wins as he does in the end and the next two circuits will not favor either rider. Holland -is sandy, Heikki did well there last year in the 500cc GP but Moisseev also does well in sand. It 's going to come down to the last GP in Sweden on the fifteenth of August when the 1976 250cc World Champion will be crowned, and you can b et that every rider is going to be pumped for that one. • Sunday, Ju Iy 18 San Jose Fairgrounds Double Black Plate Points * Pre e ntry $5 . *' 2 nd Moto: 1.
