With Ely exp an din g his lead, Land fell victim to Wesson in the first tum o f lap two and Garrison got by in the right-hander. Wesson and Garrison diced for seco nd through laps three and four, but Garrison took charg e for keeps exi ting th e righ t-hander of lap four. Meanwhile Ely had built up a comfortable ten-bike-length cushion. Brad Helton (Yam) led the 175-200cc comb ined Main through the right-hander and it was there that he collided with David Marrs (Suz) sending both of them to the ~ound. Then along came Rodger Lady (Ya m ) and he went down also. Alot of moaning, groaning and rolling around took place but when the red flag came out (signalin g a restart) everyone was quick to their feet and picking up the machinery (amazing how flattrackers heal so qu ickly !). After th e restart it was all Helton an d Marrs and whe n t he checkers fell , Helton ha d m ain tain ed his lead. Tum three got a lot of action when the 360·500 Novices hit the track. First James Crisp (Suz) took the le ad fr o n: Jim Ro ckwell (Yam ) in that tum. But on lap four, Crisp wen t down th ere giving Rockwell back the lead .
