Keith Berke brough t David Douglas their first win in the 125 Jr "B " division. J ace Craun cam e in first and third to lead the 125 Intermediate, while Mike T o masini added a first in the Open Intermediate. Roosevelt took first p lace points via Randy Crouch ley (250 J r) , Bill Holtman (Open Jr) and Steve Small with a ha rd fought win in the 125 Pros. Points for the schools were awarded to the overall finishes in each class with first place getting 600. Only the best six finishes are used in computing the final tally. This year's 47 high schools were represented, some by only one or two riders. One thing that was made painfully clear in the Beginner classes is the need for some son of minimal instruction for riders before they venture out into competition. Most apparently feel the front brake is to be reserved fo r a time when the rear b ra ke is gone and t hey ' d never believe you if you advised them to gas it when the tail starts wagging through a rough section. Spencer F REMONT, CAL., APRIL 18 John Tavis, Dan Castelhano and J eff Eide took home the big Ex pert brass openi ng nigh t. The new m anagem en t un der Internatio nal Raceway Parks is interested in keeping scrambles-type competition alive and plans are under way for a summer Saturday night series. Tavis ap pear ed very smooth in his domination of the 650 Expert class with classic feet up slides and power-on comer sho t s with Duane Spence re covering from a poor start to finish in front of hard-charging Bob Masters. Dan Castelhano had a tremendous b attle with Matt Carothers in the 500 Expert pitting the usual domination of the 360 two stroke again st th e newson of Thumper. The new classes had three di ffe re n t styles of Yamahas in the top four. The 250 Expert go was a re al show with Dennis Spence doing m o st o f the leadin g until th e last two lap s. Entering the in fiel d, Dennis seized th e Can-Am just as his dad Duane grab bed second. The two we re so close th at Du an e co llided and knocked them both o ff. Jeff Eide h ad it his o wn wa y from th ere wi th Kim Jorgensen catch ing b u t u nab le to pass. J erry Kennedy took enough t im e out as st arte r to win both me he a t and m ain o f th e 360 No vice while Dav e Reibin was doing the chasing. Bobby Robicheaux had a good battle with Bill Wainscott over the 500 Jr. while brother Ken Ro b ichea u x beat out Tony Adragna and Dallas Davis in the usually close 125 J r lEx combined even r, Minibikers . are still finding Doug Ch an dler th e man to beat. Do ug won the 80 class hands down and was lead in g . fh e 100 when th e motor quit. T his gave the win to Teddy Cabral . • Last rough one at Oakdale By Ann Carr OAKDALE, CAL., AP RIL 25 Pioneer Arena close d out its rough scrambles season today with 130 riders attending. Fierce winds made a slippery, dry course in spite of frequent track preparation. Father/son combin~tion Denny Nugent (Open Novice) and Scott Nugent (80 Junior) took home identical firsts in their respective events. Denny's win was his first since cleaning out the fence along the concession tum while Scott continues to charge in hi s class . Other action featured a near Honda sweep in the 125 Novice Mai n as Joe Tomao outlasted a charging Richard Arnaiz. Richard sailed fro m fourth to second in a very aggressive ride, passing up Chet Armstrong and Ti m Ish id a. Expert events suffered today fro m getoffs as Francis Lo pes broke an arm and Bill Cherry cracke d so me rib s in t he heats. Min i 100 m en tu rn ed in the best rides as J oh n Rabideau '5 class "en traction proved to be a good choice. John le d the Main for seven laps , succumbed to Terry Lewis 's Suzuki on lap eigh t, and gave in to friend Shawn Callahan on the white flag lap.
