Anaheim, CA 92804 714-827.()220 22 bi~yed THE FINEST IN COMPETITION DIRT BIKE RIMS FROM YOUR District 37 TT Scrambles aren't the only things that happen at Elsin ore Raceway these days. First they put in a speedway practice oval ; then along came the Plonkers to throw an ATA poi nts trial on a seven-mile loop laid out in the hills surrounding the track. Marl and Whaley, taking deliberate ones and twos much of the time, found the be st way to work the loose soil laced with ro cks. The t rial was difficult fo r Experts and fai rly easy for everyone else, as th e scores bear out (Marlan d's 50 co mpar ed to Amateur winner Marry T ripes' 23 or Nov ice winner Lan ce Ver burg's 14 ). Bernie Schreiber was second Exper t nine points in arrears after four "fives" netted him a disastrous 28-point firs t loop. It was catch-up from then on. Mike Griffitts, first tim e out on Vic 's 348 Cota, was third with a 6 5. "The trial opened (fo r Experts and A m at eurs ) with two good "mountain-goat" spectator traps . Trap One was a humongous rockpile with treacherous footing. While the Amateurs rode it straight across , the Experts were given a scary-looking approach straight up and down a bluff before hitting the rocks. After about 20 minutes of san db aggin g, "After you Alphonse" and walking up and down the bluff to im p rove the trail , the Experts wo u nd up riding it like a freeway until they got on the rocks. Griffitts was clean, Whaley took an angry two, while Bernie got sideways in the rocks and took out a stake for a surprise five . Trap two, Griffit ts fived on a sharp rock step, Bernie fived in abo ut t he same place, Marland 'Scrambled and saved it with a three. That set the pattern for much of the trial. The "killer" section for Experts was a powdery hillclimb laced with hidden rocks wh ich everybody b lew at least on ce. Marland fived it twice , then one-dabbed it on the third and final loop. In other classes, the winners vaulted clear and aw ay from theircompetition. Mike Stone went 2-0-0 to clean the Kids ' class . Verburg had eight points on second Novi ce Paul Webster, though th ird-fourth was a points tie resolved by cleans, as . was seco n d-th ird in the Am ateur class. . Lots of fun and games before and after t he trial as the Experts discove red the speedway oval. What with Marland calm ly carrying the fr on t wheel all the way around the ov al , Ron . Doster making his Bul track faster than most of the Division Two types practicing, engaging in sand-kicking contests with Bernie, the speedway riders began to get downright owly . When one of them brandish ed a tire pump, the trials guys quit making them feel bad and gathered on the hill to wa tch. Just an all-around fun da y. • Results in Re sults Sec t ion. Bob Han nah takes it to th e top at Valley Cycle Park. III Cl: :l: lI- o III I-
