In the Novice mob, Dapper Dan Harris layed it on heavy again for the overall. Norm Blackmer powered his mighty Kaw for second while Mel Shapiro and - Randy Lyall gassed it for third and fourth . Norm Stephens wailed on his CZ for several laps until he stuck his'leg out to check the wind direction, bu t the wind won. Strohmenger uses a 350 t o beat 900s Mallory makes a comeback By John Ulrich ONT ARlO, CAL., MAY 2 Chuck Strohmenger , used his Yamaha RD350 to give riders' of larger machines fits today in the Super Cafe class. Ontario is said to be a horsepower track, but Strohmenger battled his way into the front tri o with his aggressive, have-no-fear riding style, not horsepower. At the end of the first lap, Pat Beacom on a R.C. Engineering Kawaski Z-1 led. Just behind Beacom was Strohmenger, who had already forced his way past Jeff Steele (Hon 750) and Art Friedman (Hon 400). Friedman pulled into the pits at that point, his fast Yoshima Honda having 'sprung an oil leak. Beacom won, Steele retired, and Strohmenger, was second. Third was Leland Nakagawa on a Kawasaki 900. Racing in 500 Production later, Strohmenger's attempts to do as well as he did in the Super Cafe race were thwarted when he crashed in Turn 16 on the fourth lap. "I was dicing ~th Bill Henry (Yam 350) and tried to get underneath him. I got down on the white line in Turn 16 and got off really fast." Strohmenger's left arm was packed with ice and wrapped in a splint after the race. He swore' he'd become a tuner The action started with th e- Junior and Senior mini bikes running together, with -Morgan Clay (Yam) winning by a bike length over Don 'Adams (Yam). The 125 Expert class was dominated by the Carter Bros., Larry \Yam) running first and brother Randy Yam) a close second. Danny Boaz (Yam kept them honest with a close third. The 250 Novice class was jammed with action as 14 bikes tried to play leader. Bob Russell, on a new Yamaha, won with Mike Brewer and Bobby Boaz following. , Larry Carter again triumphed in the 250cc Expert class with Tucson rider 'Bobb y Scott finishing second. Pro Expert Rick Kraft made a rare appearance and left little doubt that Pros go a lot faster than Amateurs. Rick' .and Marty Halkola, Pro Junior riders ran 1-2, just warming up for the Pro ' half-mile on April 25. Jon Sellers again dominated the Open Expert class , with' Tom Burcham and Bobby Smallwood making the old man sweat. ' • Results inResults Section. The two leaders pulled aw ay from Emde. At - h e mid-way point, t Baeder still led, but Klinzmann passed on the next lap. One more lap and Baeder pulled off the track with a broken ring. Klinzmann beat Emde by 15 seconds. Dick Fuller was third. In a 350 GP rematch, Baeder led until he crashed. Jumping up in a fury, Baeder threw his helmet. Old Timers at Spillway By Dal Calais SANTA MARIA, CAL.', APRIL 25 A strong wind that blew in over the weekend didn't hamper the stout hearted over-40 gang whose crimson and gold jerseys dazzled the Elks Cerebral Palsy Benefit. Marvin Olson sand blasted his ' way around for yet another overall win followed closely by Jim Warden and Bob Pawling. ,In the Expert hash, it was N Dennler on his mighty Maico all the way with S.B. Michaels in second. Doug turnout of to attract Sportsman of the Pros were Jack Keese, Ron Gibson, and Dave Hensche. . Without question the sensation of the evening was the arrival of Chris Mallory (Mon) in the 250 Intermediates after a five month layoff. Mallory had celebrated his return with a win in the 250 Junior class last week and moved up to Intermediate just this week. Rich Titus (Suz), who normally reigns over the 250 Intermediate class, became drastically aware of the new challenger as Mallory won the first moto. Between races Mallory became aware that he was really out of condition after his long layoff, but at the start _ of the second go he immediately grabbed the holeshot, Titus began closing the gap and began to breathe d own Mallory's neck. Titus knew he ,had to whip Mallory in the second for the overall win. As Mallory becamevisably tired Titus repeatedly attempted to pass without success. Titus had to settle for his first second in a long time as Mallory held on for the overall win. ' • Results in Results Section. / 21
