J._f.SI' • • • •• , , _ 'I • IDe The course soon turned back into the sand hilIs and knowledgeable riders knew where they were heading: Down CRC's favorite slope - a long steep sand downhill that seemed to go right off the end of the world. Butt back over the ' rear fender, shift to third and gas it! Na turally there was a check waiting at the bottom and it was the tie breaker! It was quite 'a challen ge to navigate ' down the hill and still try to hit the check at 30 seconds into the minute (perfect enduro score) . A few came close including CRC's Number One pl ate holder Sam Lyman who nailed it at 29 seconds into his minute. ' At one point one rider started bulldogging his bike down the hilI and the riders behind him followed suit. Soon there was an ant trail of bulldogging bikes which lasted un t il one rider came blasting down the hill splitting riders right and left as he powered his way down. After the check the course headed ' back across the valley to the Spangler Hills for the only bottleneck as the course leading through a ro ck ledge got ch ewed up and riders soon were backing up. The canyon had been used on past enduros with no problems, but not this time . It took anywhere from two to 20 minutes to get thro ugh . As of this writing it is unknown whether CRC will adjust the scores by throwing out the check after the bottleneck. If so the enduro will be decided at the tie breaker. • > UJ .J e Two T'shold the cake By Elaine Jones Z S > a: a: _~_-"'S Look children. the bunny left rocks instead of eggs for your father's' Pucker Bunny baskets. They just love them. ~ 0 .:>i'l~ " Yamaha mounted Bruce Bolden walked away with the win in t he Ama teur class, with consistent loop ~,,!,res of eight, eleven and ten, and a total of 29 cleans. He be at out Jon Montgomery (Btil) by six points and a winning score of only 16 points. , The Beginner class was the largest and, although the sections were not very difficult, the action was tight as the first three riders ended up with seven points apiece. The n umber of sections cleaned became the deciding factor. Larry Emge (Bu l) won with 36 cleans, while Jon Hayt took second with 33 cleans. • (Well. on second thought.•• The Easter (Pucker) Bunny pays a visit By Larry Langley RED MOUNTAIN. CAL., APR. 11 CRC's annual Pucker Bunny Enduro was paid a visit by the Easter Bunny who handed out eggs and goodies to ovc;:r 600 participants. The event was pitted at Charlie's · Place, a favorite watering hole of desert riders where the terrain lends itself esp.ecially well to family enduro competition in that it abounds with easy and fun trails. CRC's lust loop was mostly just th at. The CRC point chasers were all primed for the second loop. The first check was located over a short rocky hilI which didn't slow down the good riders much but caught the Cs struggling. A dash across the valley led to the sand hilIs of the Summit Range. A fast 21 mph avera ge awaited after the three mile "free" section from the previous check. The co urse now resembled a roller coaster, going up, doWn, right and left. Riders knew a check had to - be waiting, especially those running late! But they lucked out as the course let out on to a fireroad, , allowing the tardy runners to get back on schedule. . CORONA, CAL. , APRIL 14 Don Tortorelli and Mike Tidwell met head on for a ten lap main on the Sh ort Track that really br ought the spe ct ators to their feet. , Mike got the holeshotoff the line with Don right behind. He was holding him off until lap five when Don got a wheel under Mike and powered out of the com er into fir st . The battle really got hot and heavy as Mike dived harder into the co rners, only to have Don come back with what appeared to be more power in his Harley , pull away down the straight and tighten up again in the turns. Don took the checkered and provided an excellent example of very competent , clean racing in its purest form . On the half-mile, Tidwell came back to win the 250 Expert Single class and Don went out with attrition problems. Mike rounded out the evening by winning the Short Track Money Race over Doug Davenport and Craig Armstrong. Little Danny Perkins had to ride his 125 Honda against the 250 Amateurs, May be not so easy . 21
