The Novice class stampeded in with Rodent Ron first and, after numerous problems, Beaver Ben second, Rickety Rick missed a check on the second loop, but rode all the way back to get marked for a third. ATA/ITA Saddleback Trials to Whaley By Jon Hayt SADDLEBACK PARK, CAL., APRIL 4 The ATA/ITA trials held at , Sad dleback Park varied from the normal trials routine, as the usual long lines of nervous riders were avoided when each rider started at a different section than the one before him. Some riders started at the last sections, cutting down on the traffic. The 104 entries were given many more sections to ride than the usual twenty-five or so but there was more - tha n enoug h ti me to compensate for the successful lo nger trials. ,0 Marian Whaley (Han) was up to his usual skillful tricks pulling in the best Expert ride for the day with only 21 points for the entire ' trial. Whaley applied his ability as a thinking rider on many sections requiring the brains before muscle technique, which characterizes his style. Bernie Schreiber took second behind Whale y by only six points. The Bultaco rider lost traction on the difficult third section and dropped a close score so that Whaley won without too much .o f a struggle. Mark Eggar (Hon) took third. Whaley makes it loo k easy .
