Denton still led as they moved toward the "Wheelsmith Hill", but Taylor slid underneath and passed him in mid-air over the jump. In the final corner, David took the lead and the win over Gary in one of the most exciting races all season: , Mota two found Taylor with th e holesho t and Den ton second from last into the first turn. Taylor had the race in his hip pocket and Denton managed to move into fifth o n the final lap . In the final five-lap per Den ton again grabbed the holeshot and went on t6 claim the win with David a comfortable second and first overall. Denton finished second in points and Vince Van Hook had an excellent night taking third in all three motos. d::' In the 250 and 500 Pro divisions last year's CMC number o ne, Bill Rubly, walked away from the whole deal with overall victories in both classes. In the 250's, Rubly took the first two rounds and fi nished second to Davy Carlson (Mai) in the final five -tapper for the easy overall win. The 500 Pro class looked, to be tough, but R ubly again dominated the action with three straight wins. • Res ults in Reslts Section. Bobby > ~ III N N ~ III John Atwood, on e of t he most con sistent 125 Pros in CMC Frida y night MX action, had to settle fo r fo urth. but it didn 't cramp his style. He won both. Tim McWhorter, fresh off his Ascot victory, proved why he's the number one Novice by winning the 250 Expert Twin. Eddie San Roman had more than his hands full with gearing problems and Art Junker handled both amazingly we ll to collect second. Tim, not ready to rest on his laurels" was the big winner of the half-mile Money Race far out-distancing anything in sight. Denny Aguirre, riding for C.H . Kawasaki in Riverside, got back in the winning groove on the Open Amateur half-mile, Kawasaki of Pomona rider, and owner, Dick Lewis was in for second. Dick balanced the tables ,and sh ared the wealth by winning the Amateur short track. 22 looked on the Open Expert half mile, they should ne ver leave. It took the m about two laps to get everything sorted out and then it was Randy and Rich one, two to the finish line . Gord o n Loar riding a new KTM hit for two winning both the short track and half-mile 250 Novice goes. He said the bike was slow but Andy Bautista and Bob Kivrizis who followed him home might argue the point. Kirk Johnson, who has found a happy ho me in the winner's circle at Pomona, won both the mini goes . Jenkins nipped Terry Harvey Singleton to win the 125 Novice short track and it took its toll as he was unable to make it back to the line for the half-mile , In fa ct it took its toll on everyone except Terry Singleton who won the half-mile class by default. Denton's back, but Taylor's still at bat By Tom Blattler IRW INDALE, CAL., APRIL 16 Gary Denton has rejoined the action after a six week lay-off due to a broken ankle. Meanwhile, ' Denton's best buddy and arch- rival , David "Bones" Taylor has been cleaning up the 125 Pros with relative ease. At the drop of th e 'gate in the opening mota, it was very apparent that Tay lor would have his hands full as Denton pulled the perfect holeshot in the first turn. Tay lor moved in right behind Gary and attempted to stay with him, but by lap two Denton held a ten-bike length lead. But Taylor was not t o be denied as he closed to less than a bi ke length on the final lap . and Chappy Blose we nt home with top money for the day . Twenty-seven riders tore into the firs~ turn in the 250 Expert mota with Tom Pulver leading th e wayan his old Kawasaki. But Roger Jones (C·A) ,saw his c han ce halfway through the first lap and took over the lead. John Imbriale (Hus ) held down third, followed by Doug Raines (Kaw) and Scott McPherson on a Can-Am. Do ug workea his way up to second before his gear box screwed up . Bob Blose (Suz) and Chuck Sun (Hus) were smoothly working their way up to the leaders. Roger J on es crashed, which gave Blose the lead and eventually the win at the end of the 30-minute mota. Chuck Sun held down second with John Imbriale, T.J. Warren (Man) and Gary Hickerson • (Kaw) filling out the top five. In the second mota, Bob Blose pulled a picture-perfect holeshot, with Doug Raines eating his dust in second. Blose held down the lead until he bent his brake pedal and had to stop for repairs. Raines wheelied by and took over with a big lead. Chuck Lampe (Kaw), Gary Hickerson and Andy Frola (Bul) fought it out for second through fourth. Blose worked his way ba ck u p to Frola but couldn't get by and that 's how theY finished. Blose won the overall with Lampe second and Hickerson a solid third. evu The 125 Expert class was ag,w, dominated by Chappy and Bobby Blose (Han). Chappy passed brothe r Bob" fiJl the lead in the first mota but did ii; t have to worry about him in the second, since he had to work up to second after a middle of the pack start. ' rl~ Chuck Sun (Hus) remained " in Phoenix after the 250 Na tio nal laSt week and was looking good, oiit mechanical problems deterred his effo rts in the 250 and Open Expert classes. However, since Canyon has started paying by mota, the win in the second mota of the Open class and his second in the first mota of the 250 class paid off. • Results in Results Section.
