Pioneer Rough Scrambles still gassin' By Ann Carr OAKDALE, CAL.;MAR. 2 1 A beautiful 70 degree day greeted the racers at Pion eer, as riders pushed to get in the few last rough tumbles before flat track season begins. As racers advance to higher classes new faces capture the lower ranks. Dave Giddens and "S teve Mayfield outdistanced a large group of 60 Novices while Brian Estes andJeff Jones have begun ' to rise in the 80 group. Rob Mayfield of Salinas ou tlasted Dean Coca in the 175 and Mike Castro sandwiched between Jimmy Fee 's Honda and Lemon Wallace's Yamaha in the 250 Novice Main . J unior closies featured a hard charge by Gary Gallagher in the 250 Main. Gary rode aggressively after a slow heat to power his Jorgy's Can-Am around Jack Grenig on the white flag lap . Alex J o rgensen settled for second in , the 250 Expert heat but blitzed . team ma te Mike Jennings in the Main . Matt Carothers captured an exciting third over hardcharging MXer Don Can taloupi, Can taloupi had previously raced by Mit ch Davidson's B1endzall Special for a 125 victory. Davidson returned to the wars following removal of a pin in his leg and ap peare d to' run .short of steam in the Main. Mini Expert action was marred from the beginning of th e 100 Main as ... and uncovers t he t rac k too ! The well manicured half mile track got its first wounds fro m the mighty Mini class. And what a show it was ! J eff Crooper o f 'Amb o y , Washington, and Dave Cooper of Po rtl an d , Ore gon, had at it througho u t th e first heat bu t Crooper 's b ike used u p a spark p lug on the th ird lap of the six lap heat. The Open class was another interesting race to watch. Ro n Miller (Mai) was charging and had a 300 foot lead in the heat, w he n the bike got a sick spark -plu g and dropped him to last place. In the main, ditto. The Open gold went to Dennis Manning of Portland. John Bratten of Salem was the big go ldgetter with an easy win in the 250 class and a second in the 125 class. Sometimes when the leaders get way ou t in fron t, the real race can take place further back. In this case it was the 250 class fourth and fifth spots with at least six exchanges during the last two laps. Dave Bringas (Y am) out-cornered Allen .
