CAL., MAR. 21 Dust, dust and more dust was the order of the day at Carnegie. where attempts at watering the . , sun-baked soil were mostly in vani. The racing hower, was another story. . Ron Self (KTM) out .o f Dirt Factory was not the winner in the 25 0 Pro class as that honor went to Phil Crane. But Self was the star of the class along with Chris Grewer (Hus). In the first 250 moto Self pulled aw ay with Bultaco pilot Bruce Hanlon hot on his tail. Phil Crane (Su z) was running third. Self and Hanlon blew off , the rest of the pack like there was no tomorrow. For a full 15 minutes Self and Hanlon went at it like- cats and dogs, never budging an inch for the other guy. For a brief period it seemed Hanlon lost his concentration and dropped off the pace. Thai was it, for about three seconds Hanlon lost Self on the track. Hanlon, now off the pace, tried a little too hard and laid it down in a soft, silty turn. That left Self all alone at the finish line wi th Phil Crane second and .Ch ris Grewer not far hehind in third place. Moto two looked like it would be an instant replay of the IITst as Self once . again pulled the holeshot with Hanlon close behind. Coming down the downhill it looked serious between Self and Hanlon, as Hanlon was forced out of the sweeping berm turn by the aggressive KTM rider. Hanlon sat in the dusty berm as more bikes piled in to him. Self's worries were far from over as Chris Grewer was now in hot pursuit. Grewer, who, like Self is a somewhat · aggressive rider t made several drives on Self but Ron was just too fast · in the turns. Grewer was slightly faster going up the long uphill and .he pu t it to his advantage. He kept it on just a little bit ' longer and was able to ace out Self on the inside. Self dives back under Grewer • • 'I'lI'l. J;ep~c;s .Ip.\I~h tq the.de).igh~.. p ~ W .. ... --""" ..... _.. ...... ,_....... . ~ ..... .. ~ This kept up for quite a few laps, as many thought Grewer would tire and not be able to keep up. He proved them wrong as he did a remarkable job staying w ith Self. Grewer again ' pulled Self on the uphill and stayed abead coming down, but Self reached deep in to his bag of tricks and literally forced his bike into Grewer, squaring off for the turn ahead. Coming around for the flag was the big surprise, as Self melted his spark plug w ire, leaving him to finish ba ck in eighth place. Grewer won , but go t second overall still a remarkable job. Phil Crane had the consistency to win overall, Danny (Magoo) Chandler also riding a new KTM again showed no mercy for his fellow 125 . Pros as he walked away and fin ished both motos with 20 second margins. Moto two found Mike Marques (Hus) leading the unruly pack up the start hill, but Magoo was riding his tail and . waiting for the right time to make his move. It cam e after a tight hairpin turn. As Magoo motored away, the boys in the back started to have a little race. Marques, Tro y Deherrera (Yam) and Ron .SeII were all so close they could be pu t under th e proverbial blanket. Coming around on the last lap it was Ron Self leading. • Results in Results Section. Third ~nnual 'Rainier Dealer's Challenge By Sue Sykes '. PUYALLUP, WASH ., MAR. 14 The Berm of Tacoma won top honors at the Third Annual Rainier .Intern ational Motorcycle Dealer's Challenge and walked away withthe $750 shop prize. Ra"cing was au t of sigh t, as were the first place Rainier Mirror Trophies and the $750 purse for each Pro class. FMF ace Warren Reid of Westmins'ter , California turned it on for a first overall In the 250 Pro division and moved his Te am score up to sixth out of over 45 de alers entered. Great limited number of members at therace, Moto one of the 250 Pro was a fast . running go with Mark Gregson (Kaw) passing gate leader Buck Murphy (C·A) on the Rainier Jump right out the bag. Gregson finished first and Murphy took a solid two. When the 35 racers left the start again Murphy was leader, but with Gregson down and third place Rick Weidman down, the red came out. The next time Buck got his lead 'again with Gregson running second and Warren Reid third. Buck's front tire broke up and all he could do was slow it down and j ust finish. Gregson fought the loose bolts on his gas tank for the last six laps after he took over the lead so Reid sailed on by. Another "Flyer," J im Gallagher, did his fair sh are and cran ked au t a first overall in the 100 A spot. The race was . a crowd pleaser each moto. Gall agher rode it au t in mota one and picked up the holeshot second time out. Sam Raphael (Suz) got a pass after Rainier Jump the first lap but Jim regained his lead and turned it on. Hot on the trail .was Mark Luchini. Mark stayed there to bite aijim's fender for seven laps. On the last off-camber Mark shot by and flew up Rainier for the flag . The 1-2 gave Gallagher his first and Luchini (Suz) ;.che cked in with a 3·1 for second. Bill Joyce (CH) rode a brilliant 125 Pro race moto one - getting the lead on lap four and riding out to the finish. In . mota two the opening honors went to Gary Rac ca (Hon) as he put together his second finish behind Warren Reid anda ' four for first overall. Reid (FMF) checked out' first in moto two of this 125 Pro action but trouble in moto one kept him out of the money. In Open dicing the lead became the exclusive property .of Oregon's Chuck Sun (Hus) who claimed all laps of moto two. In moto one Randy Schweizer (Mai) grabbed the lead with his famous wide sweep off the berm but Sun passed him in lap five. The race after that was between SUIL and Canadian Larry MacKenzie (Yam) - side by side much of the time. On the last turn before the finish it was a toss up and only the scorers knew who went by IITst. Super Mac did pick up this first for the moto ...... . .... "- .. ~.... . . . . _- -.
