Denton & Rubly play same game at Irwindale By Tom Blattler IRWI NDALE, CAL., FEB . 20 A complete revamp o f the Irwindale motocross cou rse set the stage for some wild racing last Friday nigh t, but again Den ton and Rubly appeared in the winners ' circle. The 12 5 Pro class looked to be all David Taylor, who is agai n riding for P.K. Racing in La Puente, as the guy they call "Bones" captured the first two motos fro m Gary Denton . In the fmal ro und, Taylo r ne ede d only a secon d to take ho me t he top money. At t he drop o f th e gate, Den to n took the lead followed by Marty Miller, Rob Zamora, and Taylor. David easil y went by Zamora bu t had his hands full whe n it ca me time to m ake the move on Miller , and for tw o laps they dogged each other. Finally , T ayl or made a last ditch effo rt to pass as th e two riders moved o n to the back straigh taway. However, as Taylor mo ve d to the insi de of Miller, David slid o u t an d saw all o f t he chances for the overall go away. Den to n took th e easy win an d overall, Ta ylor wa s second an d Za mora, on a Whittier Honda, thi rd . T aylor ca me back to defeat Bill Rubly and Bill Ch apin in the " Kin g of the Hill", a race th at had to be run twi ce. The first time aro un d, Rubly centerpunched Den to n an d all fo ur riders went down. The race was re-run and aga in Taylor ran away for the victory . Rubly agai n made a shambles of the 250 and 500 Pro divisions with overall victories in bo th fo r the second straight week. It was Rubly's fourth consecutive 500 Pro win at Irw in dal e. and the Flyi ng Mac hine Factory looks almost unbeatable . Dan Barnes rode his Maico to second, with Bob Elliott (Mai) finis hing t hird. Bob Blose (Hus) and Robert Brawner .(Kaw) were fighting o ver second, Blose pulled away and Brawner broke. . Tripes got a bad second moto st art bu t wo rked his way through the p ack to dic e with Blo se who had taken ove r first from Brawner. Tripes passed Blose af ter he got stuc k in a hole , and wa s do in g cross- ups wh ile Andy Frola (Bul) smoothly worked his way t hrou gh t he pack in to th ird.
