The Open Expert class took off with Rob Norgaard (CZ), back to serious racing after a whil e off the lo cal trac ks, winning mota one, followed hot and heavy by Bob Krah fro m Idaho Falls, Id ah o . The second mo t o looked lik e it m ight be a re-run but on lap five Krah and No rgaard began switching the lead until the last lap flag w hen Krah set tled down t o business and took the lead. Norgaard was second and Tom Amelina (CZ) took th ird. First amateur and fourth overall went to Alan Hunter. The 250 Expert Class had a gree n bike ridden by Dave Morris taking ho me r fi st overall after leader J im Martin lost a ch ain in moto two. Martin came back strong to hold a second. Gary Cox on a Yamaha rode two steady mo t os for third. Corki Moore, ba ck racing after-a two month absence from a broken wrist at the Anaheim MX Finals, showed the Experts how to go by taking a first overall in his first AMA race at Carlsbad. Giving Moore some trouble for a few laps was Steve Carlson on a very fast Honda. Jerald Steward took a way back third. • • Results in Results Section. At the st art of the first moto, Dave Foltz (Suz), Gary Ogden , and Ch uck Lunde, were all side-by-side through the first tum. Foltz slipped into a small lead for a couple laps until Ogden passed him . Chuck Lunde was pushing on Foltz 's rear wheel but ti me kept Ch uck in third, Hrynkiewicz rode into fourth. On the second go, IIrynkiewicz pu lled the pack in to the first tu m, Lunde and Foltz were looking for the faster line . Within on e lap Lunde was way out in front never to be pressured again . Hrynkiewicz held onto second ju st ahead of Fo ltz . Meanwhile Ogd en was just cruising alo ng, in near las t , since all he had to do was sim p ly fin ish this mo to . In t he final mo t o , Foltz pulled off an other ho leshot , but Lunde qu ickl y mo t ored his new AW 440 arou nd fo r the lead. Ogden sat t his moto ou t an d just d reamed ab o ut the $ 10 00 waiting t o go home with him. Hrynkiewicz had all kinds o f t rou bl es wi th his Maico durin g t he series; firs t electrical probl em s and today, eve n though he had j ust picked u p bi ke up fro m the Cooper Motor Co., he blew out half his gea rs.
