About mid-afternoon a light snow began to fall and as the race wore on, both snow and wind steadily picked up. By the time the transition to darkness was complete (around 5:30 p. m.], the weather was in irrefutable control or the race. The snowy darkness s wrallowed up the most powerful headlight beam alo ng with the course markers and cycle tracks. The race officials called a swift halt to the contest before anyone wa s seriously hur t or hopelessly lost. Results in Results Section. cowtown In the northwest corner of Nebraska to wage their annual around-the-clock battle with the raw climate, the ru gged deeply-cut rangeland, th e frozen cowpies, and t he co nsu m ing fatigue that is the Chadron 24 Ho ur Endurance Race. In all, 76 riders paired off on 38 bikes to resolve who could circle the difficult 24 mile co ur se the most times between noon on Saturday and noon Sunday. In sp ite of an early evening bliz zard th at obliterated the course causing an unscheduled halt to locate lost riders, co mpet iti o n was fierce and those who participated in this exceptionally well run event were treated to some fine racing. By mid-afternoon the teams to bet on for the Open class win included Yamaha ISDT-candidate John Fero and his partner Rich Celli on a 500 Yamaha, Floyd Stretch and Bob Bauerkernper frorn the local cycle shop riding a 400 Monoshock, and Charles Specht and Milo Rust on another 400 Mono. The brother teams of John Dodd/Earl Soester and Gary Dodd/Al an Soester were running within striking distance or the front runners - a definite threat in a race or this duration. Steep, slippery uphills. deep drifts in the ravi nes, and crusted snow o n the open sections of t he course all favored the mo re powerful Open bikes and lap ti mes reflected this fac t. Even so , the slower paced battles in the smaller d isp lace men t classes were no less exciting. The 250 co ntest between Ve rn and Daryl Pete fis h riding a Honda MR and Bob McKeen an d Oll ie Todd on a Husky WR was not decided until after the tro ph ies we re awarded. The 175 class win was within reach o f at leas t four teams: Marv and Howard Felz on a Can-Am, Steve Brickner and Leon Dent on a Hon da MR: Do ug King and Herb In skiing this is a free fall but in motorcycles it s a crash . •
