Martin, Wise take Austintacious MX By Greg Labbe AUSTIN, TEX., OCT. 18 The race everyone came to see was the showdown between Stevie Wise and Dicky Turnbo. Turn bo the local star who had consistantIy shown flas hes of stardom at tracks across Cen tral Texas ; Wise, t he yo ung veteran, returning fro m the National Motocr o ss wars whe re he had esta blishe d h im self as one o f th e t op riders in the co untry. So, wi th the amateur races co mpleted and the 125 Experts asse mbling at t he line for the first of the Expert rno tos, everyone grabbed a beer and headed up on the hill to watch Wise and Turnbo have it out. No one really noticed Jimmy Martin, sitting on the starting line. They should have. This was only Jimmy's second race co m ing off of a shoulder injury and when the rubberband snapped he showed that the long layoff had not rusted his reactions as he led the pack through the first tum. Wise was second with Turnbo third and the chase was on. Anyone who expected Martin to fold under the pressure of the dogfight behind him must have been disappointed, as he steadily pulled away from the battling pair. Wise was at a disadvantage since the box-stock Husky he'd borrowed from Austin Sportcycles wa s totally unfamiliar to him and slightly down on p ower, Th e battle raged, fender to fender, an d o n lap two Turnbo p ut a dar ing u phill pass on Wise. Local whiz Mark Wheeless, was jam ming his Yamaha around the track at an incredible three seconds p er lap fas ter than t he lead trio, and despite a h orrible start, was in fourth place and closing fast at motos end. Martin maintained a distant second , challenged o nly once by Turnbo who laid it down late in the mota and had to settle for second on points. Jimmy Martin was the overall winner and Stevie Wise took ho me bard-earned fourth place money . Wise had a little easier time of it in the 250 Expert division as he won both motos after only brief challenges early in each moto. Rob Morrison and Turnbo had quite a race going for over half of the first mota unt il Dicky finally got by. Meanwhile, Ro ger Brown was reeli ng in rider after rider. With less than a la p to go he pulled within striking dis tance o f Turn bo an d Wise, but it was too lat e. The second mo ta saw Wise run away and hide after both Turnbo and Bro wn crashe d, dro pping way back in t he pack. In the mo rn in g' s Amateur ac tion a co up le of riders doubled up o n their tr o phy intake.
