T he most notic eable observation was that the top ra ted expert s we re in such a su per-casual mood - a lo t of kidding and joking between the riders and checkers. Perhap s the natio nal riders were kind of reli eve d and jus t relaxi ng aft er th e tough NATC Ch ampionship series. Th ey were all tryin g t o win , make no mi st ake ab out that . but the trial di dn't see m t o be a " life or death" event as it has in past fo r so me ex perts . All in all the me et, laid o u t by Tom Burman an d co m pany , was a good o ne in spite of a last minut e emergency. Seems th at an o wner o f an area that was used for the o riginial seven mile 'loo p ch an ged his mind late Saturd ay night retracting ap proval to us e his land . Thus, V.O.T. E., the host club, had to hustle, . hustle to layout a completely new three mile loop (an d sections) Sa turday night an d Sunday mornin g. The weary, tired club was still able t o start the trial at 10: 15 a.m, The Amateur class wa s won by still another u p-and-co m ing trials rider fro m San Die go , Scott Parker on a Montesa. Dennis Gilmore (Bul) took second and earned enough tr ansfer points to tu rn Expert. Don Buxton (Mo n) took third . Mike Meade and Harold Rich als o transfered to Ex pert. 'The Novi ce Class was won by C. Basset (Bul) wh o o nly d ro pp ed I I followed by yo ung Oli p oints Thordason (Ya m) and R. Spruel (Ha n) . Seems that i t was o nly a few months ago th at Oli wa s riding the Kids class on a TY 80 and here he was finishing No. Two Novice ! V :O.T.E. added a Beginners Class to the meet. There was a good turnout on sections th at were ch alle nging b ut not dangerous for th e beginning ri der . Ken McAllister (Suz) won this o ne followed by J ohn R. Smith (Bul ) only four points back. Bill Poehler (Suz) took third pl ace. Ten-year old Dann y Millard didn't trophy bu t he looked very good in this class on a Yamah a TY 80. The Senior Class was dominated by " o ld " Rick Tillet (Ya m) foll owed by Bob Sinclair on a 1976 Bultaco, This class (3 5 years and older) rode four N ovice se ctions a nd four Amateur sections. T he Kids Class h ad a first - the kids laid t he sections out themselves including two real neat ones in a pile of weeds about fo ur feet high . T he host club did an excellenijob of laying out quite a variety of sections. Of the Expert sections, only two (three and eleve n ) were classified as dangerous by a couple of riders. A portion of Se ct ion Three required a climb up a four-foot rock which was surrounded by smaller, jagged rocks . A fall here without a helmet - well , you get the picture. Arnateur-Novice sec tion four was neat climb up a rock-filled gully ab o ut 6·10 feet wide and abou t 100 fee t long. This second/third gear sect io n required th ree checkers, but it was worth it . • Results in Results Section.
