Hannah had alread y gaine d a spot in th e final North vs South mat ch race on his Open bike, so by allowing Mo ates in fro n t, Marty got a spot too by finishing with a better tally (three-one) than Maico-mounted Ken Zahrt (t wo-three ). In that finale, Moates took the lead on the last lap and won. Warren Reid (Ho n] was the easy winner in the first 125 Pro moto, but bike problems forced him out of the second, giving the overall win to Jim Hale (Hon) . • Results in Results Section. Northern Cal racers open 395's winter season By Phil Carpe nter ADELANTO, CAL., OCT . 5 Greg Johnson once again stole the 125 Novice show with his supertuned Yamaha on the half-mile oval but Johnson was asleep on the start of the IT Main. He got with the action and passed five riders as he pulled up to tap the rear wheel of Rex Murdock's Suzuki and high-sided it back to last place again. Murdock casually slipped in behind Rick Blankenship, making him work for the win. Rip Sweaney found one of the fastest Hondas ever to race at 395 was ridden by Shawn Leipold, in the 500 Expert IT Main. Terry Wyrembeck's deep drive into the half-mile corners wasn't the answer to catch the old pro Rip Sweaney and his screaming Kawasaki. Laney had his work cut out for him when some northern California riders signed up for ' the Open Expert class. There is no doubt that Rick Reed is a top IT racer in Merced. He held off Laney on hi s h ome ground at the start of the Main. Earl Roloff sticks to a dry track like peanut butter sticks to bread. Sticking to Roloff like jelly was Shawn Leipold in a tremendous drive for second in the Open Expert half-mile Main that had spectators hanging over the bleachers. • Results in Results Section. Brakeless Vidic takes 250 Pro win By Jon Hayt IRWINDALE , CAL. , OCT. 3 Bill Rubly (Mai) and Jeff Vidic (Mai) have been consistent winners at Irwindale this season with Vidic winning every. week for so many times that folks have los t count. 20 Vidic was the crazy man this Friday night when his brakes failed after the first moto, This did not deter him in any way as he got off to a holeshot on the second m o to and led the pack for two laps until he slid out going into a corner on the third lap. He remounted and moved from fourth to second and did a good imitation of a half-railer as he slid aro und the track without any brakes. Vidic 's dominance of the 250 Pro class showed through as he came off. the gate in the lead again and put on a fast and sliding race. Val Tamietti (Mai), the previous moto winner, got too squirrelly as the gate dropped and found himself on the ground as the rest of the pack cleared the Whee1smith jump, leaving Val on the ground. Mike Bell, man of steel, gets down t o work on the CMC Irwindale track . He took the win in two out of three motos for the overall 125 Pro gold. Mike Bell (Ho n) showed the 125 Pros what his re putation was bui lt on as he won the second an d third mo tos after a . few good d uels with Gary Denton (Hon). Dave Taylor was on a Yamaha this evening when his old sponsor sold his H onda. Not adjusted to the new ride, he DNF'd in the second ra ce and decided to call it quits. Denton took a second overall and a first in the first moto, Bill Rubly (Mai) wo n the 50 0 Pro class, with a quick but smooth Bob Elliot (Mai ) giving him a run for his money. J eff Jennings' second moto win enabled him to slip in between Rubly and Elliot in the final tally. • Results in Results Section. Mini wins Dunes 125 short track By Dee Harris VALENCIA, CAL, SEPT. 26 Bill Matherson, an Ascot Novice, earned his first win on the short track course at Indian Dunes. Matherson (Bul) had a smooth, consistent style which helped hi m to hold off the rep eated assaults of Darrel Mulgge (Yam) , who tried everything short of knocking Matherson down to get by. Mulgge was heard telling promoter Jamie Mich eals that he n eeded to win this one to get gas money home. Bringing up the rest of the 25D-360cc Expert pack were Honda-mounted Stan Kemp and John Lundgen (Yam ). It was quite an upset in the Mini/125 f- > c( :I: Z o ..,
