Mike Bast blew a rear tire fo r th e second time in two rides, with the win going to Larry Sh aw. Mike finally got his first points in event nine behind Bruce Penh all with Bobby Schwartz taking three pain ts. During half-time the Junior Speedway riders ha d their first title shot for the California State Ch am pi o nship Jun io r . National Champ, showed the fans that h e is back on top. Rick won the Scra tch Main on o ne of tackiest tracks ever laid down at Cos ta Mesa. Ther e w as m uch mo re tractio n than th e riders were used to, caus ing several riders to lo op their bikes at t he starti n g gate. Rick 's little brother Gene is one o f th e newest ride rs on the Speedway scene, but is making hi s mark with one win after ano th er. Gene won t he Division Two Main in the last few feet of the fin al lap wh en S tu Egli le ft j ust enough room fo r Woods to slip by . Bruce Penh all ran second to Rick Woods in th e Scratch Main Event, but the Handicap Main was all Bruce 's. He took over th e lead in the 111'5t lap with a great pass on the inside fro m fif th pl ace to the lead in one tum . The new Miss Speedway was picked by the riders.
