I In 1968 Sonny Nutter became the first California State Champion in an event run indoors at the L.A. Sports Arena. The following year this event was moved to Bakersfield where Steve Bast had won the tide five times. The eighth running of the 10 California State Championship was again held at Bakersfield, where a capacity crowd saw the top sixteen riders in qualifying points based on the first two rounds meet head on in twenty even ts of Scratch racing. The program is designed so that every rider will ride at least once against every other rider. Top-seated rider Scott Sivadge was beaten by Steve Bast in the first ride, setting a pattern for Steve that would go unchallenged all night. In event number four, Mike Bast came up against Dubb Ferrell, the hottest rider around for the past seven wee ks, Mike blew his re ar tire completely off the rim in tum one of the first lap and got no points for his rust ride. Ferrell won, getting three points. Again in event five Ferrell carne out on top over Mike Curoso, Bill Cody and Scott Sivadge, Event seven was Steve Bast over Bruce Penhall, Mike Konle and Rich MacMurray , putting him in a tie with
