Vince Mead, Ted Davidson and Rob Murray came up heat race winners in the Novice divi sion with Mead the fastest, despite a second row start. Fortune, aboard a last -m inut e sp ar e mach in e , nip ped Dave Baker at the finish line for seco nd behind Davidson but his lu ck ran out right there. The final was a near d uplicate of the previous week with Davidson up fro n t and Mead running a close second, waiting for an opening. But the By Bob F. Read GARDENA, CAL., OCT. 10 Alex Jorgensen returned to Ascot to burst ' Torn Berry's bubble. Berry came back looking for his second straight main event win but jorgy, fully recovered from his defeat on National night was again running hot. The next-to-last half mile of the 12 season featured a combined Expert/J unior program that found 10 riders clocking in the 22 ·second bracket in time trials. Junior Steve Eklund led the way with j o rgy seco nd and Berry third. Veteran Mert Lawwill found the next year's Experts, riding as J uniors in the closing weeks, to ugher than expected. Mer t ran third in t he heat, third in the Semi, just squeaking into th e final . The track was exceptionally fast in' the heat with Berry the fastest , taking out Lawwill's two-year-old five lap .record by one second. For the second straight week J uni or Jim Wright's newly claimed Bart Markel H·D came up with tr oubles. Wright made it to the Semi with a fourth place finish in the heat race but dropped out midway in the last eli mination event. Jorgensen and the only winning Norton in captivity won the Trophy Dash with little tro uble from Berry, Pat McCaul and Eklund. The big-bike final was all J orgy with Berry chasing. Lawwill dropped o ut o n the fifth lap , running last. McCaul dumped the Donabedian Triump h in the South tum at the halfway point as Ek lund was making a charge to take second away from Berry. The first half of the race also found top rated Junior, Dan McWhorter, go ing no place and running ahead of only Lawwill. The late laps saw Berry holding off Eklund and McWh orter pi cking up slight steam , passin g junior Scott Pearson. opportunity never came and the Ontario road race win ner held o n to score his third win in t he last fo ur ti mes ou t . Fortune never got closer t han fourth before dro pping out and losing second in the standings to Davidson with o ne race remaining. Ve rn Maxwell had his best night to fini sh fourt h be hind t he fast improving Ro b Murray. j o rgensen , McWhorter and Mead will be crowncd the Ascot seas on po in t winne rs o n the 17th with tr ophies also going t o the second and third place riders in eac h of the three classes.
