The eighth mile short track was a little wet in practi ce but shaped up for the races . When Mai n ti me ro lled around everyone seemed to have th e track wired. Wh at was t hough t to be Shawn's biggest threat was Dennis Briggs, b ut Dennis had engine p ro blems a nd didn' t ge t o ff th e starting line . Montesa-moun ted Dan McWhorter worked his way up fro m a bad st art to third behind John Ashbury on a Honda. Fourth pl ace money went to Junior rider Darrel Mudge. In the 360 Novice event it was a close race with ro ad race star Mike Baeder tak ing first place. John Lundgren was second with last week's winner Mickey Stankavich third. Bay Area Bultaco rider Kenny Zahrt showed Bruce Baron, Mike Yorba, Doug Sherman and the rest of the Open Experts the way to the first tum. After th at Zahrt was never headed as he easily outran the pack to the checkered flag. Baron held off a hard charge fro m Rams Expess spon sor ed Sherman and his Maico long enough to cross the line in second place. Mike Yorba came by for a f ourth and Randy Berkley (Mai l rounding out the .top five. After the start of the second mota Doug Sherman had the lead he needed, but Zahrt m ust have wanted the overall more as he blew by Sherman and duplicated his first mota lead . Sherman had little choice b u t to sit back in seco n d and wait for the flag to drop. Sunshine Yamaha 's Bruce Baron had his tr ouble when his bik e st arted going so ur . Baron 's YZ held o n long enough to p ut him over the line in fifth behind Mike Yorba in third, and Ra ndy Berkley fourth. Fo llo wing the st art . of the 25 0 Experts there was n o sto p ping DG's ho tshoe Dave Williams and his 250 l\lono shocker. Richee Collins took his Co llin s and Sons Maico , co mplete with up pipe, in for second af ter out lastin~ Dave Foltz (Mai) , Mark Marinez (Mai) and Jerry Trojman, on another Maico, Bru ce Baron worked h is way up to fourth, after starting off in dead las t . Again in the second mota Williams pulled t he pack into the first tum, but this ti me Baron was right on his tail . On the fourth lap Baron got by Williams, b ut a lap later Bruce fell losing his lead. A couple laps later Baron repassed Williams coming off the Canyon jump. Baro n was looking good in the lead, but agai n lost it letting Williams by for the win. Richee Collins filled in the second spot, Scott Gilman rode in for a third. The first tum of the 125 Expert class had 25 of the most wide-open riders yo u've ever seen. Dave Ero pkin and his DG Honda were out in front and plain berserking it . But I ask you, what else do you do when Bo b S te m (Yam), Dave Willia ms (Yam), Bruce McDougal (Yam) an d Alle n Smith (Han) are all ju st waiti ng fo r the smalles t mistake ? Stem soon was o ut in fr ont leaving the ba ttlin g for second place. By the time DG's Dave William s co uld b rea k lo ose fr o m the pack it was too la te to catch up. Fact ory Ya m aha rider, Mc Dougal set tled in for third. Bob Stem won the fight for the fITSt tu m of the second m ota wit h Eropkin in pursui t a nd Mc Dougal chasing both leaders.
