(Han) took a clean sec ond place in the first mota and a third in the sec ond mota. Second place overall went to Nelson Whitehill (Yam) as he finished just the opposite of Wanket. The 250 Pro clas s belonged to Mike Steams (Mon) 'as he got down to some very serious racing with Dean Stafford (CZ). ADELANTO, CAL. , AUG. 17 Winning the 'first ' time out at 395 takes some doing - and to beat Mike Laney on the half-mile the first time out is - well, almost impossible. Bakersfield is known for its fast men and Randy Griffith is no exception. This fellow took the green light and didn't look back, on the fastest Triumph to race at 395. Laney got bottled up in traffic, giving Fitzgerald the edge he needed to grab second un til lap four, when he went wide in tum two, opening the door for Laney to close the gap on Griffith. Jeff Cesmat was running a hard fourth as he . worked the bugs out of his new trick-trick Yamaha with the new hush-hush muffler. Bob -San d ers came home to take on Earl Roloff again. In 50 0 Expert separate TT action, Roloff "let" Saunders slide to victory, but got down to business in the TT mains. Taft's ' Shawn ' Leipold broke up this game with a hard drive for second. Carrol Heiland spent his night sideways at fu ll th rottle trying to keep ahead of Randy Griffi t h 's 250 Honda in Expert TT action. Results in Res ults Section. 0... By Hidden Images CARLSBAD, CAL., AUG. 24 Danny LaPorte appears to be nearly unbeatable in the 125 Pro class, which he once again proved by sweeping yet another win at CMC Carlsbad this Sunday aboard his hot Franks Banda. Robert Elliot ran off with the 250 Pro win when Jeff Jennings had his share of problems, and Bob Maxwell skipped off with the 500 Pro cash. Mike Bell (Han) is back in action as he quickly took the lead away fr om Tony Wanket (Bon) in the opening laps of the first 125 Pro mota. Danny LaPorte started off in fifth, but soon found himself ducking the roost of Bell within two laps. Bell and LaPorte then proceeded to run away from the large pack of riders, while Wanket, Kevin Crawford (Han) and Ron Turner (C-A) fought over third. LaPorte waited nearly half the mota to pass Bell, getting by the Long Beach rider on the downhill. LaPorte then put a lot o f space on Bell to win the first moto. Turner dropped third spoi when he trashed his rear hub, giving third to Alan Smith (Han), followed by Chuck Lunde (Han). The second moto was all LaPorte's, leading. it. from the second lap all the way to the flag, Bell followed up in sec ond, while Jim Domann took third. Alan Smith took third overall with a fourth place finish in the sec ond mota. Val Tamietti was out in front at the first comer of the lead-off 250 Pro m ota, holding his lead until J e.ff Jennings (Bul) jetted past the quick Maic o rider on the third lap. Robert Elliot (Hus) was also able to get by Tamietti for a shot at Jennings. The 15 -year-old Bul rider pulled away from the pac k , winning with a sound lead over ' Ellio t. Tamietti fell back to ruth, with Ray Toph am (Bu l) grabbing third, and Bob Haag (C-A) in fourth. Elli ot led the last go-round wire to Wire, 'taking the top cash when Jennings fell trying to get by a lappee while at the same time trying to duck under Elli ot. J ennin gs still grabbed second, followed by Topham in the third overall spot. Tamietti zipped into third in the final, but it was only good enough for fourth, edging out a smooth riding Bob Haag in fifth. Luke Messer (Mai) and Bill Rubly (Mai) showed the Team Precision Cycle's dominance in the first mota of 500 Pros by finishing one-two. Bob Maxwell (Bu l) slipped into third at the start, holding his position all the way. The second mota proved to be a different story. Messer and Rubly led the pack once again in the op enin g lap of the second mot a , bu t Rubly got hung up on a post and fell; Messer appeared to have it wrapped up, but a disin tegrating fr on t wheel gave the win away to easy going Maxwell, with Dave Gerig slipping into second. Messer took second overall anyway, while Gerig (Bus) took third. Rubly managed to nurse his badly vibrating Maico to fourth . • Resul ts in Results Section. Shoot out at the 'Ascot 'Corral By Mike Klinge r GARDENA, CAL., AUG . 20 It was like a western street shoot out as Jeff Jennings and Val Tamietti went into moto three of the 250 Pros with only three pain IS each. After the dust cleared and following a fantastic crash. Jennings was the overall winner at Ascot CMC Motocross. As the gate dropped in the 250 Pro's first start, Dave Pessy (Man) grabbed the holeshot followed close by Jennings and Tarnie tti, Jennings then banzaied past Pessy and Tamietti, off the tall Ascot jump to take the lead and the win . Jeff Vidic (Mai) was into the first 23
